Mastering GED Social Studies: Cause and Effect in History

Today we tackle a GED favorite: cause and effect in history. Nearly every history question asks you to connect a cause to its effect, or an effect back to its cause.

The GED rarely asks “In what year?” — it asks “Why?” and “What resulted?” Good news for Myanmar students: no date memorization needed. You need chains of reasons — how one event leads to another. Learn signal words and chain-building, and history questions become solvable logic puzzles.

Key Concepts & Definitions

Key vocabulary for the exam:

Cause: An event, action, or condition that makes something else happen. The “why” behind an event.
Effect: The result or outcome of a cause. The “what happened” that follows.
Correlation vs. Causation: Correlation means two things happened together; causation means one made the other happen. The GED loves testing whether you confuse the two.
Long-term vs. Short-term Causes: Long-term causes build over years (rivalries, unfair treaties); short-term causes trigger events suddenly (an assassination).
Multiple Causation: Big historical events almost never have one single cause. Wars, depressions, and movements result from several causes working together.
Catalyst / Trigger: The final spark that sets off an event — the “last straw.” The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the trigger of WWI, not its only cause.
Turning Point: A moment after which history changes direction — e.g., Gettysburg in the Civil War.
Unintended Consequences: Effects nobody planned or wanted. The Treaty of Versailles was meant to bring peace; it unintentionally helped cause WWII.
Signal Words: Words that mark cause-effect relationships: because, since, led to, resulted in, as a result, due to, consequently, therefore, sparked, triggered.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

Build the Chain: The Core Method

Draw a mental chain: Cause → Event → Effect → Next Effect. Example: Harsh Treaty of Versailles → German anger and ruin → Hitler’s rise → WWII. Asked “what caused X?” — walk backward. “What resulted?” — walk forward. Choices off the chain are wrong.

Signal Words Are Your Map

Cause signals: because, since, due to, sparked by, triggered by. Effect signals: led to, resulted in, consequently, therefore, gave rise to. These words mark exactly the relationship the question will ask about — slow down when you see them.

Correlation Is Not Causation

The GED’s favorite trap. “Ice cream sales rise in summer; drownings also rise in summer; therefore ice cream causes drowning” — absurd. The real cause of both is hot weather. History version: the press (1440s) came before the Reformation (1500s), but it spread reformers’ ideas rather than causing them. For “X caused Y,” demand a mechanism: how exactly did X produce Y?

What the GED Actually Asks

Expect: “What caused X?” (walk backward; beware effects disguised as causes), “What resulted from X?” (walk forward; beware pre-X events), and “What is the relationship between X and Y?” (usually correlation vs. causation). Golden rule: check the direction — half of all wrong answers reverse the arrow.

Comparison: GED History vs. Myanmar Matriculation History

Myanmar students often study history the matriculation way — then meet the GED way:

FeatureMyanmar Matriculation StyleGED Style
Main taskMemorize dates, names, and factsAnalyze why events happened and what resulted
PassagesShort; questions test recallLong documents; questions test reasoning about the text
“Best” answerThe exactly-memorized factThe best-supported logical connection
Wrong answersFactually wrong statementsTrue statements with the wrong causal direction or mere correlation

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Four worked problems:

Example 1: The Cotton Gin (1793)

Passage: In 1793, Eli Whitney’s cotton gin made cotton enormously profitable. Consequently, Southern plantations expanded — and because enslaved people did the work, demand for enslaved labor increased sharply.

Question: What was an effect of the cotton gin’s invention?
A. Slavery ended sooner in the American South.
B. Cotton farming became less profitable.
C. The demand for enslaved labor in the South increased.
D. Eli Whitney moved to the Southern states.

Solution: C.

Analysis: Chain: gin → profitable cotton → expanded fields → more enslaved labor. A reverses the effect. B contradicts the passage. D is unmentioned.

Example 2: From WWI to WWII — The Chain

Passage: The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to accept full blame for WWI, pay massive reparations, and lose territory. Humiliated and economically wrecked, Germany saw Hitler rise on promises to restore its greatness — leading to World War II.

Question: According to the passage, what was a long-term cause of World War II?
A. The invention of new weapons during WWI.
B. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
C. Germany’s victory in World War I.
D. Hitler’s promise to bring peace to Europe.

Solution: B.

Analysis: Walk backward: WWII ← Hitler ← anger/poverty ← harsh treaty. B starts the chain. A is unmentioned. C is false (Germany lost WWI). D misstates the promise.

Example 3: The Great Depression and the New Deal

Passage: The 1929 stock market crash sank banks and businesses; millions lost jobs. Because suffering was widespread, Americans elected Franklin D. Roosevelt and his promised “New Deal.” As a result, government created jobs programs and a safety net — greatly expanding its economic role.

Question: Which statement best describes a cause-effect relationship in the passage?
A. The New Deal caused the stock market crash of 1929.
B. The severity of the Depression caused voters to elect Roosevelt and support an expanded government role.
C. Bank regulation caused businesses to close.
D. Roosevelt’s election caused the stock market to crash.

Solution: B.

Analysis: Check the arrow! A and D reverse it (crash came before Roosevelt/New Deal). C reverses it too. B follows the chain: suffering → election → bigger government.

Example 4: The Printing Press — Help or Cause?

Passage: Gutenberg’s press (1440s) made books cheap. When Luther challenged the Church in 1517, printed pamphlets spread his ideas rapidly. The press did not create his criticisms — corruption and earlier reformers had planted them — but it accelerated their spread.

Question: What is the relationship between the printing press and the Reformation?
A. The printing press was the sole cause of the Reformation.
B. The printing press had no connection to the Reformation.
C. The printing press accelerated the spread of reform ideas but did not single-handedly cause them.
D. Martin Luther invented the printing press to spread his ideas.

Solution: C.

Analysis: A claims single causation — denied (“did not create”). B denies any link — false. D reverses history. C is right: accelerator, not sole cause.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. The Single-Cause Fallacy
❌ Wrong: “WWI happened only because of the assassination.” ✅ Correct: “The assassination was the trigger; rivalries, alliances, and militarism were the long-term causes.” Why: Matriculation asks for “the cause,” singular. The GED expects multiple causation — always ask “what else contributed?”
2. Confusing Correlation with Causation
❌ Wrong: “The press was invented before the Reformation, so it caused it.” ✅ Correct: “It accelerated the spread; earlier corruption and reformers were also causes.” Why: “Before” feels like “because.” Demand a mechanism: how exactly did X produce Y?
3. Reversing the Arrow
❌ Wrong: “The New Deal caused the Great Depression.” ✅ Correct: “The Depression caused the New Deal — check which came first.” Why: Under time pressure, students match keywords instead of checking order. Verify: did the “cause” come before the “effect”?
4. Judging the Past by the Present (Presentism)
❌ Wrong: “People in 1793 should have known slavery was wrong, so the gin’s effect is surprising.” ✅ Correct: “Analyze causes and effects in their historical context, not with today’s values.” Why: Moral reactions feel like analysis but derail logic. The GED asks what happened and why.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Draw the chain: Sketch Cause → Event → Effect mentally. Answers off the chain are wrong.
Hunt signal words: Because, led to, consequently — the test labels its logic.
Check the arrow: Verify the “cause” came before the “effect.” Reversed arrows are the #1 trap.
Ask “what else?”: A single cause for a huge event? Suspect the single-cause fallacy.
Demand a mechanism: For “X caused Y,” ask how. No mechanism = correlation.

GED Social Studies
