Mastering GED Science: Space Science — Solar System and Universe

Dear Myanmar GED students — look up on a clear night and you’re looking at the GED’s favorite laboratory. Space science on the test is patterns and scale: reading a planet data table, explaining moon phases from a diagram, or reasoning about why seasons flip between hemispheres. No telescope required — just careful thinking about motion, light, and gravity.

This lesson maps our solar system, untangles rotation vs. revolution, explains moon phases and eclipses with simple geometry, and builds cosmic scale — through GED-style diagrams and data. (Myanmar below!)

Key Concepts & Definitions

Nine tools for space-science passages.

Solar System: Our Sun + 8 planets + moons, asteroids, and comets, all bound by the Sun’s gravity. Order from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
Star: A giant ball of hot gas producing its own light by nuclear fusion (our Sun is a star). Planet: orbits a star, doesn’t make its own light — it reflects starlight.
Galaxy / Universe: A galaxy = billions of stars + gas bound by gravity (we live in the Milky Way). The universe = everything that exists, containing billions of galaxies.
Rotation vs. Revolution: Rotation = spinning on an axis (Earth: 24 h → day/night). Revolution = orbiting another body (Earth around Sun: 1 year). The GED tests this pair constantly.
Moon Phases: The changing shapes of the Moon (new → crescent → half → gibbous → full) are caused by our viewing angle of its sunlit half as it orbits Earth — not by Earth’s shadow.
Eclipses: Solar eclipse: Moon blocks the Sun (Moon between Sun and Earth). Lunar eclipse: Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon (Earth between Sun and Moon).
Seasons: Caused by Earth’s 23.5° tilt, not distance. The hemisphere tilted toward the Sun gets direct rays → summer; tilted away → winter. Hemispheres always have opposite seasons.
Gravity: The attractive force between masses. Stronger with more mass, weaker with distance. It holds planets in orbit, causes tides (Moon’s pull), and keeps your feet on the ground.
Light-Year: The distance light travels in one year (~9.5 trillion km). A star 4 light-years away is seen as it was 4 years ago — telescopes are time machines.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

1. Solar System Patterns — Read the Data Table

The GED often gives a planet table (distance from Sun, orbital period, diameter). Two patterns unlock it: (1) farther = longer year (Neptune takes 165 Earth years!); (2) inner four are small and rocky (Mercury→Mars), outer four are gas giants (Jupiter→Neptune), split by the asteroid belt. “Which planet has the longest day?” or “which is densest?” — find it in the table, don’t memorize.

Exam move: sort by the column the question asks about. Trend questions (“as distance increases, period…?”) want one word: increases.

2. Rotation vs. Revolution — Day, Night, and Years

Earth rotates west→east every 24 hours: the Sun appears to rise in the east because we’re turning toward it. Earth revolves around the Sun every 365¼ days — the quarter-day is why we add February 29 every leap year. The Moon revolves around Earth (~27 days) and rotates once per orbit — that’s why we always see the same face (“the Man in the Moon”).

Exam move: “what causes day and night?” → rotation. “What causes a year?” → revolution. If a question mixes them, slow down and label which motion is which.

3. Moon Phases & Eclipses — Geometry, Not Magic

The Moon is a ball; the Sun lights half of it. As the Moon orbits us, we see different amounts of that lit half: new moon (dark side faces us) → crescent → half → gibbous → full moon (lit side faces us) → back again, ~29.5 days per cycle. Earth’s shadow plays no role — that’s the #1 misconception.

Eclipses need a straight-line lineup: Sun–Moon–Earth = solar eclipse (Moon’s shadow hits Earth; daytime goes dark briefly). Sun–Earth–Moon = lunar eclipse (Earth’s shadow covers the Moon; the Moon turns reddish). Solar eclipses are rare at any one place because the Moon’s shadow is tiny.

Exam move: on phase/eclipse diagrams, find the Sun first, then check who’s blocking whom. “Whose shadow?” answers every eclipse question.

4. Gravity and Cosmic Scale

Gravity weakens with distance — that’s why the distant Sun still holds Earth (it’s enormously massive) and why the Moon (close but small) dominates our tides, not the Sun. Tides rise twice daily as Earth rotates through the Moon’s gravitational bulges.

Scale: the Sun is 109× Earth’s diameter; the nearest star is 4.2 light-years away; our galaxy is 100,000 light-years across. The GED tests scale with comparisons: “put these in order: planet, star, solar system, galaxy, universe.” And remember — distant galaxies are redshifted (light stretched), evidence the universe is expanding.

Exam move: ordering questions go small→big: moon < planet < star < solar system < galaxy < universe. Redshift = moving away = expanding universe.

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Example 1: Planet Table
Table: Mercury (0.39 AU, 88 days), Venus (0.72 AU, 225 days), Earth (1 AU, 365 days), Mars (1.5 AU, 687 days). Which statement is supported?

A. Closer planets are always larger   B. Orbital period increases with distance from the Sun
C. All planets have the same year length   D. Distance has no pattern

Solution: B. The data show a clean trend: 88 → 225 → 365 → 687 days as distance grows.

Step-by-step: Read down the period column: strictly increasing with distance. A isn’t in the table at all; C/D contradict the numbers. Lesson: trend questions = describe the column pattern in one sentence.
Example 2: Moon Phase Diagram
A diagram shows the Sun on the left, Earth center, Moon at the position directly opposite the Sun (Earth between them). What phase is seen from Earth?

A. New moon   B. Full moon   C. Half moon   D. Crescent

Solution: B. Full moon — Earth’s night side faces the fully sunlit face of the Moon.

Step-by-step: Sun’s light hits the Moon’s far side… wait — with Earth between Sun and Moon, sunlight passes Earth and lights the face pointing at us: full moon. (If the Moon were between Sun and Earth, we’d see the dark side: new moon.) Lesson: find the Sun, then ask which face points at Earth.
Example 3: Opposite Seasons
It is July. Yangon (Northern Hemisphere) is hot and rainy. What season is it in Sydney, Australia (Southern Hemisphere), and why?

A. Summer — both hemispheres share seasons
B. Winter — the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun
C. Winter — Australia is farther from the Sun
D. Spring — seasons change monthly

Solution: B. Winter — tilt, not distance, decides seasons; hemispheres oppose.

Step-by-step: July = north tilted toward Sun = northern summer → southern winter. C uses the distance myth (both hemispheres share the same distance!). Lesson: any “other hemisphere” question → flip the season, cite the tilt.
Example 4: Eclipse Geometry
During a total solar eclipse, the sky darkens at midday. Which arrangement caused it?

A. Sun–Earth–Moon (Earth’s shadow on the Moon)
B. Sun–Moon–Earth (Moon’s shadow on Earth)
C. Earth–Sun–Moon
D. The Sun stopped shining

Solution: B. The Moon sits between Sun and Earth; its small shadow races across Earth’s daytime side.

Step-by-step: “Solar” = Sun blocked → blocker (Moon) must be between Sun and viewer (Earth). A describes a lunar eclipse. Lesson: name the blocked body, place the blocker in the middle.
Example 5: Light-Time Scale
Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach Earth. A solar flare erupts at 12:00. When could it affect Earth?

A. 12:00 exactly   B. About 12:08   C. About 11:52   D. The next day

Solution: B. About 12:08 — light (and the flare’s effects traveling at light speed) needs 8 minutes.

Step-by-step: Nothing outruns light; the flare’s light and particles can’t arrive before their travel time elapses. Lesson: distance ÷ speed = time — the GED’s favorite scale reasoning.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. “Summer = closer to the Sun”
❌ Wrong: “Earth’s elliptical orbit causes seasons.” ✅ Correct: The 23.5° tilt causes seasons — distance barely varies and can’t explain opposite hemispheres. Why it happens: Diagrams exaggerate the oval orbit. But both hemispheres share Earth’s distance — only tilt explains opposite Julys.
2. “Moon phases are Earth’s shadow”
❌ Wrong: “Earth’s shadow covers the Moon to make a crescent.” ✅ Correct: Phases = our viewing angle of the Moon’s sunlit half. Earth’s shadow only matters during a lunar eclipse. Why it happens: “Shadow” explains anything dark in daily life. The GED separates monthly phases (viewing angle) from rare eclipses (real shadows).
3. Mixing up rotation and revolution
❌ Wrong: “Earth’s revolution causes day and night.” ✅ Correct: Rotation (spin) → day/night; revolution (orbit) → year. Why it happens: Both are “Earth moving” and Myanmar terms blur. Hook: rotation = roll in place (day); revolution = round trip (year).
4. Scale confusion: solar system vs. galaxy vs. universe
❌ Wrong: “The solar system and the galaxy are about the same size.” ✅ Correct: Moon < planet < star < solar system < galaxy < universe — each step is enormously bigger. Why it happens: Textbooks draw them at similar sizes on the page. The GED tests ordering — memorize the chain, not the numbers.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

☀️ Sun first: On any space diagram, locate the Sun first — light direction explains phases, shadows, and seasons.
🔄 Ro-tation = day: Spin in place → day/night. Orbit around → year. Never mix them again.
🌗 Whose shadow?: Every eclipse question is answered by “whose shadow falls on whom.”
📏 Order chain: Moon < planet < star < solar system < galaxy < universe. Write it from memory in 5 seconds.
🔴 Redshift = receding: Stretched light → moving away → expanding universe. One-line logic, free marks.
