Mastering GED Science: Reading Scientific Data and Graphs

Hello everyone! Today we master the skill that decides your GED Science score: reading scientific data and graphs. The secret: GED Science is a reading test in disguise — about 90% of questions hand you a passage, graph, table, or experiment to interpret. You win with scientific practices (reading axes, spotting trends, judging evidence), not memorized facts.

For Myanmar students this cuts both ways: careful reading beats years of memorized facts — good news if your school science was weak — but our schooling trains us to memorize facts and skip diagrams, the opposite of what GED demands. This lesson rebuilds your approach: graph vocabulary, the five GED visuals, a 3-step anti-trap method, and five worked GED-style problems.

Key Concepts & Definitions

Every GED graph question is built from these ten ideas:

Independent Variable: The factor the experimenter changes — on the x-axis. Trick: “I change it — Independent.”
Dependent Variable: The factor being measured — it depends on the independent variable. On the y-axis.
Axis: The numbered lines framing a graph. x = horizontal, y = vertical. Read axis labels first: what is measured, in what units.
Scale: Number spacing on an axis (1s, 10s, 100s…). A truncated scale skipping zero makes tiny differences look huge — a favorite trap.
Legend (Key): The box explaining what each color, symbol, or line represents. Read it first; never answer about the wrong series.
Units: The measurement on every number — g, L, °C, ppm, %. Classic trap: graph in milligrams, question in grams.
Trend: The general direction — increasing, decreasing, or flat. GED asks about the trend far more than single points.
Mean, Median, Mode: Mean = sum ÷ count; Median = middle value in order; Mode = most frequent. One outlier can drag the mean far from the median.
Interpolation vs. Extrapolation: Interpolation = estimating between known points (safe). Extrapolation = predicting beyond the data (risky).
Sample: The group actually studied. Trustworthy only if large and fairly chosen — the right answer never claims more than the sample allows.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

The 5 Graph Types GED Uses

  1. Bar graphs compare categories (CO₂ by decade). Compare heights vs. the y-axis — check it starts at zero.
  2. Line graphs show change over time. Read the slope: steeper = faster change; flat = none.
  3. Pie charts show parts of a whole (%). Slices total 100%. Trap: chart in %, question in dollars.
  4. Scatter plots show the relationship between two variables. Rising dots = positive correlation; falling = negative; formless = none.
  5. Data tables hold exact numbers in rows/columns. Read headers and units first.

The 3-Step Method (Read → Locate → Answer)

  1. Read the frame FIRST: title, axis labels, units, legend — before the question. Say: “This shows [y] vs [x], in [units].”
  2. Locate exact values: finger on the graph — x-value up to the point, across to the y-axis. Tables: right row and column.
  3. Answer ONLY what is asked: no outside knowledge. “According to the figure” means the figure is your only truth.

Interpolation & Extrapolation

Plant height: Day 10 → 5 cm, Day 20 → 9 cm. Day 15 is between known points — interpolate: ≈ 7 cm. Safe; GED accepts it. Day 60, when the graph ends at Day 30? Extrapolation — the plant may stop growing; any exact prediction is unsupported. Rule: interpolation inside the range is fine; extrapolation beyond it is a trap — unless the question says “assuming the trend continues.”

Trends vs. Single Points

For “Which statement is best supported?” the answer describes the overall trend (“yield rose, then leveled off”); traps quote one odd point (“highest in Trial 3”). One point never proves a trend. Related favorite: correlation vs. causation — scatter plots show things rising together but can’t prove one caused the other. “Associated with” is safe; “causes”/”proves” are red flags without a controlled experiment.

Comparison: GED Science Graph Questions vs Myanmar School Science Exams

Matriculation habits confuse GED takers. The exams are near opposites:

FeatureGED Science — Graph & Data QuestionsMyanmar School Science Exams
TestedInterpreting unfamiliar graphs, tables, experimentsRecalling memorized facts and formulas
Background neededAlmost none — numbers are in the questionYears of memorized content
Typical stem“According to the figure, which conclusion is best supported?”“Define ___. State the formula.”

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Five GED-style problems, easiest to hardest. Practice the 3-step method on each.

Example 1: Bar Graph (Easy)

“Atmospheric CO₂” in ppm — 1990: 354 | 2000: 369 | 2010: 390 | 2020: 414

Q: Increase from 1990 to 2020?
A. 15 ppm
B. 60 ppm
C. 354 ppm
D. 414 ppm

Solution: B. 60 ppm

Step-by-step: 1990 → 354, 2020 → 414; 414 − 354 = 60. C/D are raw values, not the increase; A (15) is the 1990→2000 rise — wrong years.
Example 2: Line Graph, Truncated Axis (Medium)

“July Temperature in City X” (°C). Y-axis starts at 20°C.
2018: 28 | 2019: 29 | 2020: 31 | 2021: 30 | 2022: 32

Q: Best supported?
A. Temperature more than doubled, 2018→2022.
B. Best estimate halfway between 2020 and 2021 ≈ 30.5°C.
C. Rose every single year.
D. At this trend, 2025 reaches 45°C.

Solution: B. ≈30.5°C

Step-by-step: A = truncated-axis trap: 28→32 is ~14% (32÷28≈1.14). C false: 2020→2021 fell 31→30. D extrapolates beyond data. B interpolates between known points: (31+30)÷2 = 30.5 — the only supportable statement.
Example 3: Pie Chart — Percent vs. Dollars (Medium)

“Household Energy Use” — Heating 42%, Water 18%, Appliances 15%, Lighting 12%, Cooling 13%. Total bill: $2,400.

Q: Yearly lighting cost?
A. $288
B. 12%
C. $1,008
D. $2,400

Solution: A. $288

Step-by-step: Chart in %, question in $ — that mismatch is the trap. 0.12 × $2,400 = $288. B answers in %; C ($1,008) is the heating share; D is the total. Ask: “percent of what?”
Example 4: Scatter Plot (Hard)

“Fertilizer vs. Yield” — x: 0–100 kg/ha, y: 2–8 tons. Dots rise, then flatten after ~80 kg.

Q: Best supported?
A. Fertilizer causes higher yields at all amounts, no limit.
B. Higher fertilizer is associated with higher yields, but benefits level off.
C. No effect on yield.
D. 150 kg/ha gives 12 tons.

Solution: B

Step-by-step: A overclaims — “causes” (association ≠ proof) and “no limit” (flattening contradicts). C contradicts the climb. D extrapolates off both axes. B uses safe language (“associated with“) for the whole pattern.
Example 5: Data Table (Hard)

“Drug Trial” — improved: A (50 mg): 12/40 | B (100 mg): 18/40 | C (placebo): 6/40

Q: Best supported?
A. 100 mg is twice as effective as 50 mg.
B. Doubling 50→100 mg raised improvement 30%→45%.
C. Cures most patients.
D. Placebo proves the drug fails.

Solution: B. 30% → 45%

Step-by-step: Convert to rates: 12÷40 = 30%; 18÷40 = 45%; 6÷40 = 15%. A wrong — 45% isn’t double 30%. C overclaims — “improved” ≠ “cured.” D backwards — placebo 15% < both drug groups. Only B matches.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Reading the Wrong Axis
❌ Wrong: Tracing from the y-axis first; reporting “temperature was 2018.” ✅ Correct: x-value → UP to the point → ACROSS to the y-axis. Why: Myanmar classes copy graphs as pictures; students rarely drill “x = what I change, y = what I measure.” Practice finger-tracing until automatic.
2. Ignoring the Units
❌ Wrong: Graph 500 mg, question asks grams, answer “500.” ✅ Correct: Convert first — 500 ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 g. Why: School problems use one unit throughout; GED mixes mg/g, mL/L, °C/°F. Reflex: circle both units, convert first.
3. Assuming the Trend Continues Forever
❌ Wrong: Line rises to 2022 → predict 45°C by 2025. ✅ Correct: Beyond-the-data predictions are unsupported, unless “assuming the trend continues.” Why: Math drills “extend the line” mechanically. On GED Science, the extended-line answer is usually the trap.
4. Confusing Percent with Absolute Numbers
❌ Wrong: Slice 12%, “how many dollars?” → answer “12%.” ✅ Correct: % × total = amount → 0.12 × $2,400 = $288. Why: Pie charts are rare in Myanmar exams; students treat % as the final answer, not a fraction of a total.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Cover the options, predict first: find the answer in the figure, then uncover choices. Traps can’t catch you then.
Units before math: circle the unit in the question and the figure; convert first (1 g = 1,000 mg). Half of “math” errors are unit errors.
No outside knowledge: “according to the figure” means the figure is law — real-world knowledge can be the trap.
Suspect every axis: y-axis not starting at zero exaggerates visuals — trust numbers, never pictures.
Kill “not shown” options: anything never in the figure gets crossed out — GED can’t test what it didn’t show.

(Pro-Tips)

1. On a properly labeled experiment graph, the independent variable is plotted on the:
Remember: “I change it — Independent.” The experimenter changes the x-variable.
2. A line graph shows water temperature: 10 min → 40°C, 20 min → 60°C. What is the best estimate for the temperature at 15 min?
15 min is between two known points — interpolate: halfway between 40 and 60.
3. A bar graph compares profits (y-axis starts at 90, not 0). A: 100, B: 110. B’s bar looks nearly twice as tall. Which is TRUE?
Trust the numbers, not the picture: 110 ÷ 100 = 1.1.
4. A data table lists medicine doses in milligrams: 250 mg and 500 mg. How many grams are in the larger dose?
Convert before choosing: 1 g = 1,000 mg, so divide by 1,000.
5. A scatter plot of rainfall vs. umbrella sales shows dots rising left to right. Which conclusion is best supported?
Scatter plots show correlation, not proof of cause. Scatter Plot
6. A pie chart shows a school budget: salaries 55%, buildings 25%, books 20%. The total budget is $100,000. How much is spent on books?
Chart in %, question in $: 0.20 × $100,000.
