Mastering GED Science: Physics Basics — Force, Motion, and Energy

Dear Myanmar GED students — physics on the GED is not about memorizing formulas. It is about reading the physical world: a distance-time graph, a diagram of pushes and pulls, an experiment about ramps and friction. The test gives you the scenario — your job is to reason about what causes motion, what changes it, and where energy goes. These ideas appear in everyday contexts: cars braking, balls rolling, pendulums swinging.

This lesson builds your intuition step by step: what forces do, Newton’s three laws in plain language, how to read motion graphs (the single most-tested physics skill), and how energy moves and transforms but never disappears. Myanmar translation below!

Key Concepts & Definitions

Nine tools for reading physics passages — learn them as ideas, not vocabulary.

Force: A push or a pull that can change an object’s motion. Measured in newtons (N). Forces always come in pairs and have both size (magnitude) and direction.
Net Force: The overall force after combining all pushes and pulls. If forces balance, net force = 0 and motion doesn’t change. Unbalanced forces → acceleration.
Newton’s First Law (Inertia): Objects keep doing what they’re doing — resting objects stay resting, moving objects keep moving — unless an unbalanced force acts. This “laziness” of matter is called inertia.
Newton’s Second Law (F = ma): Bigger force → bigger acceleration; bigger mass → smaller acceleration for the same force. Double the force, double the acceleration.
Newton’s Third Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. You push the wall; the wall pushes you back equally.
Speed vs. Velocity: Speed = how fast (60 km/h). Velocity = how fast in a direction (60 km/h north). The GED tests this distinction!
Acceleration: How quickly velocity changes — speeding up, slowing down, or turning. Unit: m/s².
Kinetic vs. Potential Energy: Kinetic = energy of motion (faster/heavier → more). Potential = stored energy (higher/further stretched → more). They constantly convert into each other.
Conservation of Energy: Energy is never created or destroyed — only transferred or transformed. A swinging pendulum trades potential ↔ kinetic back and forth (losing a little to friction/heat).

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

1. Balanced vs. Unbalanced Forces — Read the Diagram

GED force questions usually show arrows (longer arrow = bigger force). Your job: find the net force.

  1. Opposite arrows, equal length → balanced. Net force = 0. A book resting on a table: gravity pulls down, the table pushes up equally. Nothing changes — this is equilibrium.
  2. Opposite arrows, unequal → unbalanced. Subtract: 10 N right − 6 N left = 4 N to the right. The object accelerates right.
  3. Same direction → add them. Two people pushing a car with 200 N each = 400 N total.

Exam move: always resolve left-right first, then up-down. The GED loves “tug of war” diagrams — the winner is simply the bigger total arrow.

2. Newton’s Laws in Plain Language

First law (inertia): When a bus brakes suddenly, you lurch forward — not because a force pushed you, but because your body keeps moving (inertia) while the bus stops. Seatbelts fight inertia. Second law (F=ma): pushing a full shopping cart vs. an empty one — same push, the heavy cart accelerates less. Twice the mass needs twice the force for the same acceleration. Third law: a rocket pushes exhaust down; exhaust pushes the rocket up. Note: action-reaction act on different objects, so they don’t cancel.

Exam move: GED scenarios ask “which law explains this?” Match the pattern: keeps moving/stopping → First; heavier needs more push → Second; two objects pushing each other → Third.

3. Motion Graphs — The #1 Tested Skill

On a distance-time graph: the slope = speed. Steeper = faster. Flat (horizontal) = stopped. A straight diagonal = constant speed; a curve = changing speed.

On a speed-time graph: flat = constant speed; sloping up = accelerating; sloping down = slowing; the area under the line = distance traveled.

Exam move: first ask “what’s on each axis?” Students who skip this read speed-time as distance-time and fail. Then describe the story in words: “fast, then stopped, then slow” — the answer usually matches your story.

4. Energy on the Move

Drop a ball: at the top it has maximum potential (high up) and zero kinetic; falling, potential → kinetic; at the bottom, kinetic is maximum. Bounce it: each bounce is lower because some energy becomes heat/sound (friction) — total energy is still conserved, just spread out.

Exam move: “where did the energy go?” → always heat/sound via friction. And “which has more kinetic energy?” → the faster, heavier object. No formulas needed — just comparisons.

Comparison: School Physics vs. GED Physics

FeatureMyanmar School ExamGED Science Test
FormulasMemorize and derive many formulasOnly F=ma intuition and graph-reading; numbers stay simple
ProblemsLong numerical drillsShort scenarios: “which graph?”, “which law?”, “what happens next?”
GraphsPlot points from data tablesInterpret given graphs — slope means speed, flat means stopped
Newton’s lawsState all three word-perfectMatch each law to a real situation
EnergyCalculate joules preciselyTrack transfers: potential ↔ kinetic → heat
Winning movePractice calculationsBuild physical intuition; narrate the story

Bottom line: GED physics rewards understanding what would happen, not computing exact numbers.

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Example 1: Net Force
A box has forces: 15 N → right, 9 N → left, 20 N ↓ down, 20 N ↑ up. What is the net force?

A. 0 N   B. 6 N to the right   C. 6 N to the left   D. 26 N down

Solution: B. 6 N to the right.

Step-by-step: Horizontal: 15 − 9 = 6 N right. Vertical: 20 − 20 = 0. Net = 6 N right. Lesson: resolve each axis separately; balanced pairs vanish.
Example 2: Distance-Time Graph
A graph shows: 0–10 s steep climb, 10–20 s flat, 20–30 s gentle climb. Which story fits?

A. Ran fast, rested, walked slowly   B. Walked slowly, ran fast, rested
C. Stood still the whole time   D. Ran at constant speed

Solution: A. Ran fast, rested, walked slowly.

Step-by-step: Steep slope = fast; flat = stopped (resting); gentle slope = slow. Narrate the graph in words first — the answer matches. Lesson: slope = speed on distance-time.
Example 3: F = ma Thinking
Two carts get the same push. Cart P (2 kg) accelerates at 3 m/s². Cart Q (6 kg) — what happens?

A. Q accelerates at 3 m/s² too   B. Q accelerates less — about 1 m/s²
C. Q accelerates more   D. Q doesn’t move at all

Solution: B. About 1 m/s² — triple the mass, one-third the acceleration.

Step-by-step: Same force, 3× mass → ⅓ acceleration (F=ma). No calculator needed — it’s a ratio. Lesson: GED second-law questions are proportional reasoning, not arithmetic.
Example 4: Energy Tracking
A pendulum swings: at the highest point it pauses briefly; at the bottom it moves fastest. Which is true?

A. Kinetic is max at the top   B. Potential is max at the bottom
C. At the top: max potential, min kinetic; at bottom: max kinetic, min potential
D. Energy is destroyed at the bottom

Solution: C. Energy swaps between potential (top) and kinetic (bottom).

Step-by-step: High + still = stored (potential) max. Low + fast = motion (kinetic) max. D violates conservation. Lesson: track “high/slow ↔ low/fast” — the pattern never changes.
Example 5: Friction Experiment
Students slide a block down ramps of wood, sandpaper, and glass, timing each run. Which variable is being tested, and what must stay constant?

A. Testing ramp height; keep surface the same
B. Testing surface material; keep ramp height and block the same
C. Testing the block’s color; keep everything else
D. Testing time; keep the ramp the same

Solution: B. Surface is the independent variable; height and block are controls.

Step-by-step: Only the surface changes between trials → that’s what’s tested. Everything else must be identical for a fair test. Lesson: find what changes across trials — that’s the tested variable.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. “Motion needs a constant force”
❌ Wrong: “The box keeps moving because a force keeps pushing it.” ✅ Correct: Once moving, it continues by inertia — force is only needed to change motion (start, stop, turn). Why it happens: Everyday friction hides inertia — pushed boxes stop, so students conclude “no push = no motion.” In space (no friction), one push = motion forever.
2. Confusing speed with velocity
❌ Wrong: “60 km/h north and 60 km/h south have the same velocity.” ✅ Correct: Same speed, opposite velocities — velocity includes direction. Why it happens: Myanmar teaching rarely stresses the distinction; both translate loosely as အလျင်. The GED tests it directly — watch for direction words.
3. “Energy disappears”
❌ Wrong: “The bouncing ball’s energy is used up/gone.” ✅ Correct: Energy transforms — motion → heat + sound via friction. Total is conserved. Why it happens: “Energy is used up” is everyday language (phone battery “dies”). Physics language: energy is transferred/transformed, never destroyed.
4. Mixing up mass and weight
❌ Wrong: “On the Moon, the astronaut’s mass decreases.” ✅ Correct: Mass (amount of matter) never changes; weight (gravity’s pull) drops to 1/6. Why it happens: In daily life we say “weight” for what scales measure (actually mass in kg). The GED separates them: mass = matter, weight = force.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

📈 Axis first: On any graph, read the axis labels before anything else. Distance-time vs. speed-time confusion is the #1 graph trap.
🗣️ Narrate it: Turn graphs and diagrams into a one-sentence story (“pushed right harder, so it speeds right”). The answer usually matches your story.
⚖️ Axis by axis: For force diagrams, cancel vertical pairs and horizontal pairs separately, then combine.
🔁 Ratio thinking: F=ma questions are proportions (double mass → half acceleration). Don’t reach for a calculator.
🔥 “Where did it go?”: Any “lost” energy answer = heat/sound from friction. Always.
