Mastering GED Science: Earth’s Structure and Climate Systems

Dear Myanmar GED students — Earth science on the GED is systems thinking. You will read a cross-section diagram of Earth’s layers, a climate graph comparing two cities, or an experiment about the greenhouse effect — then answer “what causes what?” and “what happens if this changes?” From earthquakes in Myanmar to monsoon rains, this topic connects directly to your life.

This lesson covers Earth’s layered structure, plate tectonics (why earthquakes and volcanoes happen where they do), weather vs. climate, and the greenhouse effect — always through the GED lens: reading diagrams, graphs, and cause-and-effect chains. Myanmar translation below!

Key Concepts & Definitions

Nine tools for Earth-science passages.

Crust: Earth’s thin, solid outer skin (5–70 km). We live on it. Oceanic crust is thin and dense; continental crust is thick and light.
Mantle: The thick, hot, slowly-flowing rock layer beneath the crust (~2,900 km). Its slow convection currents drag the plates above.
Core (Outer & Inner): Outer core = liquid iron/nickel (creates Earth’s magnetic field); inner core = solid iron/nickel, hotter than the Sun’s surface, kept solid by immense pressure.
Plate Tectonics: Earth’s crust is broken into giant tectonic plates that drift a few cm per year. Most earthquakes and volcanoes happen at plate boundaries.
Weather vs. Climate: Weather = day-to-day conditions (today’s rain). Climate = 30-year average patterns (Myanmar’s tropical monsoon climate). The GED tests this distinction constantly.
Water Cycle: Evaporation → condensation → precipitation → collection, powered by the Sun. Water is never created or destroyed — just moved around.
Greenhouse Effect: Certain gases (CO2, methane) trap heat escaping from Earth — like a blanket. Natural and necessary (without it Earth would freeze); strengthened by burning fossil fuels.
Carbon Cycle: Carbon moves between air, living things, oceans, and rocks. Burning fossil fuels + deforestation add CO2 faster than nature removes it.
System & Feedback: Earth’s climate is a system of connected parts. A change in one part ripples: melting ice → less reflection → more warming → more melting (a feedback loop).

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

1. Earth’s Layers — Reading a Cross-Section

GED diagrams show concentric rings: crust (thin skin), mantle (thickest), outer core (liquid), inner core (solid). Two trends always increase with depth: temperature and density (pressure squeezes material tighter). If a question gives layer data (depth, temperature, state), match by these trends: hottest + densest + solid-despite-heat = inner core.

Exam move: on “which layer?” questions, eliminate with one fact: liquid + metal = outer core; thinnest = crust; where plates float = mantle top.

2. Plate Tectonics — Why Disasters Happen Where They Do

Plates collide, pull apart, or slide past each other. Convergent (colliding) → mountains, deep earthquakes, volcanoes (the Himalayas; Japan). Divergent (separating) → new crust, mid-ocean ridges, volcanoes (Iceland). Transform (sliding past) → shallow earthquakes (California’s San Andreas; Myanmar’s Sagaing Fault!). Stress builds for years, then releases suddenly as an earthquake — that’s why quakes can’t be precisely predicted, only zones mapped.

Exam move: “why do earthquakes cluster here?” → look for the plate boundary on the map. Myanmar sits near active boundaries — the GED-style answer is always about plate motion, never random.

3. Weather vs. Climate + Reading Climate Graphs

A climograph shows monthly temperature (line) and precipitation (bars). Read it in two passes: (1) temperature range — big swing = continental/mid-latitude; flat and hot = tropical; (2) rainfall pattern — summer peak = monsoon; even year-round = rainforest; tiny bars = desert.

Exam move: match the graph’s shape to the description before reading choices. “Hot all year + wet summer” = tropical monsoon (Yangon!). Students who memorize city climates fail; students who read shapes succeed.

4. The Greenhouse Effect — Systems Thinking

Sunlight warms Earth’s surface; Earth radiates heat upward; greenhouse gases absorb some and re-radiate it back down. The GED tests this as a chain: more CO2 → more trapped heat → higher temperature → ice melts → less sunlight reflected → even warmer (feedback!). Questions ask “what happens next?” — follow the arrows one step at a time.

Exam move: for “which change would reduce warming?” pick the choice that breaks the chain (less CO2 emitted, more absorbed by forests). For experiment data (CO2 up, temperature up), the safe conclusion is correlation consistent with the greenhouse mechanism — never “proves” alone.

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Example 1: Layer Detective
Data: Layer X — depth 5,000 km, temperature 4,000°C, liquid iron/nickel. Which layer?

A. Crust   B. Mantle   C. Outer core   D. Inner core

Solution: C. Outer core — liquid metal at great depth.

Step-by-step: Liquid + iron/nickel = outer core (inner core is solid). Depth/temperature confirm “deep and hot.” Lesson: state-of-matter + composition identifies layers instantly.
Example 2: Boundary Logic
A map shows frequent earthquakes along a line where two plates slide past each other. What boundary, and why quakes?

A. Divergent; plates separate   B. Transform; built-up stress releases suddenly
C. Convergent; one plate melts   D. No boundary; random

Solution: B. Transform boundary — sliding plates stick, stress builds, then slips.

Step-by-step: “Slide past” = transform (like the Sagaing Fault). Quakes = sudden stress release. D is never right — quakes follow boundaries. Lesson: match motion word to boundary type.
Example 3: Climograph Reading
City Q: temperature 27–30°C all year; rainfall bars peak June–September, near zero in winter. Best match?

A. Desert   B. Tropical monsoon   C. Polar   D. Mediterranean

Solution: B. Tropical monsoon — hot year-round with a wet summer season.

Step-by-step: Flat-hot line = tropical; summer rain peak = monsoon (Yangon’s pattern!). Desert would have tiny bars all year. Lesson: read shape first: temperature flatness + rain timing.
Example 4: Greenhouse Data
Experiment: two sealed boxes in sunlight, one with extra CO2. After 1 hour: normal box 32°C, CO2 box 38°C. Best conclusion?

A. CO2 has no effect   B. The thermometers are broken
C. Added CO2 trapped more heat, consistent with the greenhouse effect
D. This proves all global warming is natural

Solution: C. The data are consistent with CO2 trapping heat.

Step-by-step: Only CO2 differed → it caused the 6°C gap. C states correlation + mechanism without overclaiming (“proves,” D). Lesson: pick the conclusion that matches the data exactly — no more, no less.
Example 5: System Chain
Large-scale deforestation occurs in a tropical region. What is the most likely chain of effects?

A. Fewer trees → less CO2 absorbed → more CO2 in air → stronger greenhouse effect
B. Fewer trees → more oxygen → cooler climate
C. Fewer trees → more rainfall immediately
D. No effects; forests don’t affect climate

Solution: A. Each step follows: less absorption → more CO2 → more trapped heat.

Step-by-step: Walk the chain link by link. Trees absorb CO2; remove them → CO2 accumulates → greenhouse strengthens. Lesson: on chain questions, verify each arrow — one broken link kills the choice.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. “Seasons are caused by distance from the Sun”
❌ Wrong: “Summer is when Earth is closest to the Sun.” ✅ Correct: Seasons come from Earth’s tilt — the hemisphere tilted toward the Sun gets direct rays (summer). Why it happens: It sounds logical, and textbooks mention elliptical orbit without stressing tilt. In fact Earth is closest to the Sun in January (northern winter)!
2. “The greenhouse effect is entirely bad”
❌ Wrong: “We must eliminate the greenhouse effect.” ✅ Correct: The natural greenhouse effect keeps Earth livable; the problem is strengthening it with extra CO2. Why it happens: Media always pairs “greenhouse” with “crisis.” The GED distinguishes natural vs. enhanced — read choices for that word.
3. Confusing weather and climate
❌ Wrong: “A cold day disproves global warming.” ✅ Correct: Weather = short-term; climate = long-term patterns. One cold day is weather. Why it happens: Myanmar language uses ရာသီဥတု for both. On the GED, “climate” always means the 30-year pattern — watch the time scale in each choice.
4. Memorizing disaster facts instead of mechanisms
❌ Wrong: Memorizing “Ring of Fire” countries, then freezing on a boundary-type question. ✅ Correct: Learn the mechanism (colliding plates → quakes/volcanoes) and derive the rest. Why it happens: The matriculation habit: memorize lists. The GED gives you the map — mechanism beats memory.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

🗺️ Map = answer: On earthquake/volcano questions, find the plate boundary on the given map first — the answer is geographic, not memorized.
📊 Two-pass graphs: Climographs: temperature shape first, rainfall timing second. Two passes, zero confusion.
🔗 Chain check: For “what happens next?” verify each arrow in the causal chain — one weak link kills the choice.
⚖️ Correlation ≠ proof: CO2-temperature graphs show consistent data; the safe answer never says “proves” from one graph alone.
🌍 Tilt, not distance: Any seasons question → answer involves Earth’s tilt. Instant elimination of “closer/farther” choices.
