Mastering GED Science: Cell Biology and Genetics

Hello everyone! Today we tackle Cell Biology and Genetics — the study of life’s building blocks and how traits pass from parents to children. Remember the golden rule: the GED rarely asks you to recite memorized facts. Instead, you will get a passage about cells, a diagram description, or a genetics problem, and you must reason from it. Top skills: structure → function and Punnett squares.

Myanmar students memorized cell parts in school — but the GED asks “why does a muscle cell need so many mitochondria?” Train that reasoning now.

Key Concepts & Definitions

Cell: The basic unit of life; all cells come from pre-existing cells.
Cell Membrane: Controls what enters and exits the cell.
Nucleus & DNA: Holds DNA — the instruction manual; genes are DNA sections coding for traits.
Mitochondria: “Powerhouse” — releases energy from food. Muscle cells have many.
Chloroplast: Plant cells only; captures sunlight for photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis: Plants convert light energy + CO2 + water → glucose + oxygen. (Light IN, food made.)
Cellular Respiration: Cells break down glucose + oxygen → energy + CO2 + water. The reverse of photosynthesis — happens in all living cells, day and night.
Allele (Dominant/Recessive): Gene versions. Dominant (T) masks recessive (t): Tt and TT both show the dominant trait; only tt shows recessive.
Punnett Square: Grid predicting offspring ratios (e.g., Tt × Tt → 3:1 dominant:recessive).

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

Strategy 1: Structure → Function (Always Ask “Why?”)

Master key: structure determines function. Many mitochondria → high energy need → muscle cell. Chloroplasts → plant cell. Large surface area → built for absorption. Hunt structural clues, infer the job.

Strategy 2: Punnett Squares in 60 Seconds

Steps: (1) Parents’ alleles on top and side (Tt × Tt). (2) Fill boxes (TT, Tt, Tt, tt). (3) Count — 1:2:1 genotypes; 3:1 dominant:recessive phenotypes. Dominant needs ONE copy. A test cross (unknown × tt) reveals hidden alleles. The grid gives probabilities, not guarantees.

Strategy 3: Photosynthesis vs. Respiration — The Great Cycle

Mirror images, tested as a pair: photosynthesis stores energy (needs light, producers only); respiration releases it (all cells, always). Data: closer lamp = more bubbles = faster photosynthesis. Night CO2 uptake drops = photosynthesis stopped, respiration continues.

Comparison: GED Science vs. Myanmar School Science Exams

FeatureGED ScienceMyanmar School Exams
Cell questionsInfer function from described structuresLabel diagrams; list organelles

Golden rule: the passage is the boss.

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Example 1: Structure → function. A microscope shows Cell A packed with mitochondria and Cell B with thick cell walls and chloroplasts. Which statement is most reasonable?

A. A is a plant cell; B is a muscle cell.
B. A is likely an animal muscle cell; B is a plant cell.
C. Both are bacteria.
D. A performs photosynthesis.

Solution: B.

Step-by-step: Mitochondria → muscle; walls + chloroplasts → plant.
Example 2: Punnett square. In peas, tall (T) is dominant to short (t). Two Tt plants are crossed. What fraction of offspring will be short?

A. 0
B. 1/4
C. 1/2
D. 3/4

Solution: B. 1/4.

Step-by-step: Only tt (1/4) is short; 3/4 tall is the trap.
Example 3: Reading data. Pondweed bubbles per minute: lamp at 10 cm → 40 bubbles; 20 cm → 22; 30 cm → 8. What does this show?

A. Light distance has no effect.
B. More light (closer lamp) increases photosynthesis rate.
C. The plant is respiring, not photosynthesizing.
D. Bubbles prove oxygen is toxic.

Solution: B.

Step-by-step: 40 → 22 → 8 as light fades: more light = faster photosynthesis.
Example 4: Evaluating a claim. A seed company advertises: “Our tall-pea seeds guarantee every plant in your garden will be tall!” A gardener plants 100 Tt seeds. Best evaluation?

A. True — dominant alleles always win.
B. False — about 1/4 will likely be short; probability is not a guarantee.
C. True — Punnett squares predict exact numbers.
D. False — tall is recessive.

Solution: B.

Step-by-step: 3:1 is probability, not a guarantee.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Memorizing parts without the “why”
❌ Wrong: reciting “mitochondria = powerhouse” but freezing when asked which cell needs most. ✅ Correct: link structure → energy need → cell type (muscle = many mitochondria). Why it happens: School rewards labeled diagrams. The GED rewards inference from structure. Practice asking “what job needs this shape?” for every organelle.
2. “Dominant” means stronger or more common
❌ Wrong: “the dominant trait will take over the population.” ✅ Correct: dominant just masks recessive in Tt; frequency depends on the gene pool, not dominance. Why it happens: The everyday word “dominant” suggests power. In genetics it only describes masking in heterozygotes — nothing about strength or commonness.
3. Treating Punnett ratios as guarantees
❌ Wrong: “Tt × Tt must give exactly 3 tall and 1 short in every 4 children.” ✅ Correct: 3:1 is the probability per child; real families vary. Why it happens: Textbook grids look exact. But each child is an independent coin flip — probability describes likelihood, not a fixed quota.
4. Mixing up the two energy reactions
❌ Wrong: “respiration only happens in animals; photosynthesis makes energy directly.” ✅ Correct: respiration runs in ALL living cells always; photosynthesis stores energy as glucose in producers. Why it happens: Memorized equations blur together. Anchor: photo = light IN, food made; respiration = food broken, energy OUT.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Structure → function, every time. Unknown organelle? Ask what job its shape serves. Folded membranes = surface area = more reactions.
Punnett in 60 seconds. Parents on top/side, fill boxes, count. Dominant needs ONE copy — circle every box with a capital letter.
Read the cross direction. “Short?” ≠ “tall?” — the #1 trap.
Matter is conserved. Atoms in = atoms out.
Passage is the boss. Use the given diagram description and cross — not memorized exceptions.
