How to Easily Distinguish Between Fact and Opinion for GED

Hello to all students preparing for the GED! Today’s lesson focuses on a crucial skill: how to easily and accurately distinguish between a Fact and an Opinion.

To score well on the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) and Social Studies tests, it is incredibly important to clearly understand the difference between facts and opinions when reading passages. Exam questions often ask you to analyze the author’s voice, purpose, and bias. Let’s dive in-depth into this mini-class!

📌 Part 1 – What is a Fact?

A Fact is a statement that is provable, measurable, and verifiable. You can confirm whether a fact is true or false through research, experiments, or historical records.

💡 Key Characteristics of a Fact:
  • Objective: It does not depend on a person’s feelings or beliefs. The result is the same no matter who looks at it.
  • Verifiable: You can check if it’s true or false using books, reliable websites, or research papers.
  • Universally Accepted: These are often scientific truths, mathematical equations, or historical events.

📝 Examples of Facts:

“Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.” (A scientifically provable fact.)
“George Washington was the first president of the United States.” (A historical fact.)
“A triangle has three sides.” (An unchangeable mathematical fact.)

📌 Part 2 – What is an Opinion?

An Opinion expresses a person’s feelings, beliefs, attitudes, or personal judgments. Opinions cannot be proven true or false with scientific or concrete evidence. Opinions vary from person to person.

💡 Key Characteristics of an Opinion:
  • Subjective: It depends entirely on an individual’s perspective and feelings.
  • Cannot be proven: You cannot measure whether it is right or wrong with tools or instruments.
  • Contains Value Words: Words like best, worst, beautiful, or ugly are often included.

📝 Examples of Opinions:

“Pizza is the most delicious food in the world.” (Because “most delicious” is a subjective feeling.)
“Math is the hardest subject on the GED test.” (Math might be easy for some, so this is just an opinion.)

🔍 Signal Words for Opinions: If you see these words, the statement is highly likely an opinion:

  • Feelings: Think, believe, feel, guess
  • Extreme words: Always, never, all, none
  • Value words: Best, worst, beautiful, ugly, terrible, wonderful
  • Recommendations: Should, ought to, must

📌 Part 3 – Tricky Situations in GED

The GED will not just ask you simple fact vs. opinion questions. You need to analyze complex sentences. Let’s look at some tricky scenarios:

  1. Predictions about the future: Statements about the future are NOT facts; they are opinions or inferences because they haven’t happened yet and cannot be proven. (e.g., “It will rain tomorrow.”)
  2. False Claims (False Facts): A sentence might look like a fact but contain wrong information. (e.g., “Spiders have six legs.”) This is still classified as a statement of fact because it can be verified (and proven false). It is not an opinion.
  3. Expert Opinions: Just because an expert says something doesn’t make it a fact. (e.g., “Dr. Smith says that running is the best exercise.”) The fact is that Dr. Smith said it; the opinion is that running is the “best” exercise.
  4. Mixed Statements: One sentence can contain both! (e.g., “Hawaii, which is the most beautiful state in the US, consists of 137 islands.”) “137 islands” is a fact, “most beautiful” is an opinion.

📌 Part 4 – Informed vs. Uninformed Opinion

Not all opinions are equal. Authors often back up their opinions with facts to make a stronger argument. This is called an Informed Opinion.

  • Uninformed Opinion: “Smoking is bad.”
  • Informed Opinion: “Smoking is bad because it causes lung cancer according to the World Health Organization.”

📌 Part 6 – Strategies for the Test

1. The “Prove It” Test: Ask yourself, “Can I take a picture of this? Can I look it up in a book? Can I measure it?” If yes, it’s a Fact. If no, it’s an Opinion.
2. Look for Adjectives and Adverbs: Words like beautiful, terrible, or most important indicate an opinion.
3. Evaluate the Source: A scientific journal will have more facts. A personal blog or newspaper editorial will have more opinions.

  • Universally Accepted: သိပ္ပံနည်းကျ အမှန်တရားတွေ၊ သင်္ချာ တွက်ကိန်းတွေ၊ သမိုင်းဝင် အဖြစ်အပျက်တွေ ဖြစ်လေ့ရှိတယ်။

📝 Fact ရဲ့ ဥပမာများ-

“Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.” (ရေဟာ စင်တီဂရိတ် ၁၀၀ ဒီဂရီမှာ ဆူပွက်တယ်။) -> ဒါဟာ သိပ္ပံနည်းကျ စမ်းသပ်လို့ရတဲ့ Fact ဖြစ်တယ်။
“George Washington was the first president of the United States.” -> သမိုင်းမှတ်တမ်းတွေအရ သက်သေပြလို့ရတဲ့ Fact ဖြစ်တယ်။
“A triangle has three sides.” (တြိဂံတစ်ခုမှာ အနားသုံးဖက် ရှိတယ်။) -> သင်္ချာသဘောတရားအရ ပြောင်းလဲလို့မရတဲ့ Fact ဖြစ်တယ်။

  • Contains Value Words: အကောင်းဆုံး၊ အဆိုးဆုံး၊ လှပသော၊ ရုပ်ဆိုးသော စတဲ့ တန်ဖိုးဖြတ် စကားလုံးတွေ ပါလေ့ရှိတယ်။

📝 Opinion ရဲ့ ဥပမာများ-

“Pizza is the most delicious food in the world.” -> “အရသာအရှိဆုံး” (most delicious) ဆိုတာ လူတစ်ယောက်နဲ့ တစ်ယောက် မတူနိုင်တဲ့ ခံစားချက် ဖြစ်လို့ Opinion ဖြစ်တယ်။
“Math is the hardest subject on the GED test.” -> တချို့အတွက် သင်္ချာက လွယ်နေနိုင်တာမို့ ဒါဟာ Opinion သာ ဖြစ်တယ်။

🔍 Opinion ကို ညွှန်ပြတဲ့ စကားလုံးများ (Signal Words):

  • ခံစားချက်များ – Think, believe, feel, guess

  • အကြံပြုချက်/ညွှန်ကြားချက်များ – Should, ought to, must

📌 အပိုင်း (၃) – ခွဲခြားရခက်တဲ့ အခြေအနေများ (Tricky Situations in GED)

  • Uninformed Opinion: “Smoking is bad.”
  • Informed Opinion: “ကမ္ဘာ့ကျန်းမာရေးအဖွဲ့ရဲ့ အဆိုအရ ဆေးလိပ်သောက်တာဟာ အဆုတ်ကင်ဆာကို ဖြစ်စေတဲ့အတွက် ဆေးလိပ်သောက်တာဟာ ဆိုးရွားတယ်။”
