Mastering GED RLA: Planning Your Extended Response (Essay)

Hello everyone! Today, we are focusing on the most challenging and highest-weighted section of the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) exam: Planning your Essay (Extended Response).

In the GED RLA exam, you have exactly 45 minutes to complete the essay. Many students from Myanmar, worried about running out of time, start typing immediately after reading the passages without drafting an outline. This stems from a traditional education system where students are used to writing essays straight from their imagination based on a single topic. However, in an international standard academic essay, you cannot score well without a systematically organized structure. Therefore, we will learn step-by-step how to invest the first 10 minutes of your time to outline a vivid, strong, and highly scoring essay.

Key Concepts & Definitions

Before planning your essay, you must understand these 8 essential terms and their examples:

Extended Response (ER): The long essay in the GED exam where you must read two passages and evaluate which one is better supported by evidence.
Source Texts / Passages: The original texts you must read and evaluate. (Usually Passage 1 and Passage 2 presenting opposing views on the same topic.)
Prompt: The question or instruction telling you what to do. (e.g., “In your response, analyze both positions presented to determine which one is best supported.”)
Thesis Statement: A single, clear sentence summarizing the main point or central argument of your entire essay. (e.g., Although Passage B appeals to emotion, Passage A presents a stronger argument through its use of verifiable statistics and expert quotes.)
Outline: A drafted framework organizing the information you will include before you start writing the actual essay.
Body Paragraphs: The middle paragraphs of the essay containing reasons and evidence to prove your Thesis.
Quotation / Textual Evidence: Directly copying the author’s words from the source texts using quotation marks.
Analysis / Reasoning: Explaining in your own words how the evidence you quoted logically supports your Thesis.

Detailed Explanation: The 3 Steps of Planning

To successfully write a GED RLA Essay within 45 minutes, you must break down the planning phase into these 3 steps:

Step 1: Read and Analyze the Passages (5 Minutes)

You cannot read these passages with a simple “Reading Comprehension” mindset. You must read with an Evaluating mindset, constantly asking: “Which author’s argument is stronger?”

  • Find the Main Claim of each author.
  • Identify the Evidence they use. (Are they using Facts, Opinions, or Statistics? Apply your Fact vs. Opinion skills here.)
  • On your digital scratchpad (whiteboard), create a quick T-chart to note down the strengths and weaknesses of each passage.

Step 2: Choose the Winning Argument and Draft the Thesis (2 Minutes)

Once you finish reading, you must decide which side to support. Crucial Rule: Do NOT choose the passage that matches your personal opinion. You MUST choose the passage that has stronger, more verifiable evidence.

After deciding, draft your Thesis Statement. The Thesis must always be the last sentence of your Introduction paragraph.

Formula for a strong GED Thesis:

[Concession to the losing side] + [Your Choice/Winner] + [3 Reasons Why]

Example: While Passage A makes an interesting point based on personal experience, Passage B presents a much stronger argument because it uses statistical data, expert testimony, and logical reasoning.

Step 3: Create the 5-Paragraph Outline (3 Minutes)

Quickly jot down the following outline on your scratchpad using only keywords, not full sentences:

  • Paragraph 1: Introduction
    • Hook / Context: Brief background on the topic.
    • Thesis Statement: Your chosen side and reasons.
  • Paragraph 2: Body 1 (First Strong Point of the Winner)
    • Topic Sentence: First advantage (e.g., Statistics).
    • Evidence: Quote or paraphrase from the text.
    • Analysis: Explain how this evidence strengthens the argument.
  • Paragraph 3: Body 2 (Second Strong Point of the Winner)
    • Topic Sentence: Second advantage (e.g., Expert opinion).
    • Evidence & Analysis.
  • Paragraph 4: Body 3 (Flaws in the Losing Argument)
    • Topic Sentence: Point out a logical fallacy or weakness in the opposing author’s text.
    • Evidence & Analysis of why it is weak.
  • Paragraph 5: Conclusion
    • Restate Thesis: Rewrite your thesis using different words.
    • Final Thought: A strong concluding summary.

Comparison Table: Summary vs. Evaluation

A common mistake is writing a “Summary Essay” instead of an “Evaluation Essay.” Here is the difference:

Feature Summary Essay ❌ (Wrong for GED) Argumentative Evaluation ✅ (Right for GED)
Primary Goal To tell the reader what the passages said. To critique how and why the author built their argument.
Thesis Statement “Both passages discuss whether school should start later.” “Passage A is a stronger argument because it utilizes scientific research.”
Body Paragraphs “Passage A says this. Passage B says that.” “Passage A’s evidence is objective because…”
Personal Pronouns (I, Me) “I think school should start later.” NEVER use personal pronouns. Maintain an objective, third-person tone.

Extensive Example Bank (Templates)

Here are 15 highly effective sentence templates you can use to transform your outline into a finalized essay.

Category 1: Thesis Statements

Weak Thesis: Passage A is much better than Passage B because it makes a lot of sense.
Strong Thesis: Although Passage B raises a valid concern about costs, Passage A presents a more logically sound argument by utilizing statistical studies and expert testimonials.
Nuance: The weak thesis is too vague and relies on feeling (“makes sense”). The strong thesis (Band 7.0+) uses a concession (“Although…”) and provides specific structural reasons (“statistical studies”).

Category 2: Topic Sentences for Body Paragraphs

  • Focusing on Evidence: The primary strength of Passage A lies in its integration of credible, data-driven evidence.
  • Focusing on Expert Authority: Furthermore, the author bolsters their claim by citing reputable authorities in the field.
  • Focusing on Flaws (Losing Argument): Conversely, Passage B’s argument is fundamentally flawed due to its reliance on hasty generalizations.

Category 3: Introducing Textual Evidence

  • Direct Quote: To illustrate this point, the author states, “City revenues increased by 15% after the tax was implemented.”
  • Paraphrase: According to the text, a recent survey revealed that a vast majority of local business owners support the initiative.
  • Highlighting Weak Evidence: The opposing author attempts to prove their point by stating, “Nobody likes waking up early,” which is merely a subjective opinion.

Category 4: Analysis / Reasoning Sentences

  • Explaining Significance: This statistic is highly effective because it provides a concrete, measurable outcome rather than a vague assumption.
  • Connecting to the Claim: By referencing an environmental scientist, the author establishes credibility and removes personal bias from the argument.
  • Criticizing Logical Gaps: However, this anecdote fails to serve as solid evidence because a single individual’s experience cannot represent the entire population.

Category 5: Conclusion Sentences

  • Restating Thesis: Ultimately, the position advocated in Passage A is superior due to its foundation on empirical data and logical reasoning.
  • Final Summary of Flaws: Passage B’s reliance on emotional language and lack of factual support renders its argument unconvincing.
  • The Final Thought: A strong argument must be built on a foundation of verifiable facts, a standard that only Passage A successfully meets.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Arguing with Personal Opinions
❌ Wrong Outline: “I think students should wear uniforms because it saves money for my parents.” ✅ Right Outline: “Passage A’s argument is stronger because it provides economic data showing that uniforms reduce household expenses by 20%.” Psychology: Traditional school essays ask “What do you think?”, conditioning students to use “I believe.” The GED strictly tests evaluating *external* text-based evidence.
2. Writing a Summary Instead of an Analysis
❌ Wrong Outline: Body 1 summarizes Passage A -> Body 2 summarizes Passage B. ✅ Right Outline: Body 1 analyzes Passage A’s stats -> Body 2 analyzes Passage A’s logic -> Body 3 criticizes Passage B’s emotion. Psychology: Students feel safer simply rewriting what they read (Rote learning) rather than applying Critical Thinking to evaluate *how* the text was written.
3. Skipping the Outline Phase
❌ Action: Start typing immediately to save time. ✅ Result of Not Outlining: Mid-way through the essay, you get “Writer’s block,” lose your logical flow, and paragraphs become mixed up. Taking 10 minutes to plan guarantees a smooth 35 minutes of writing.
4. Using Emotional Transition Words
❌ Wrong: Luckily, Passage A gives us some numbers. / Sadly, Passage B has no facts. ✅ Right: Furthermore, Passage A incorporates statistical data. / Conversely, Passage B lacks factual support. Psychology: In spoken Myanmar, expressing emotional states as transitions is common. In an academic English essay, transitions must remain objective.
5. Ignoring the “Winning” Side’s Flaws OR the “Losing” Side’s Strengths
Rule: Don’t be extreme. Even great arguments have minor flaws. To get a perfect score, your outline should reflect nuance: “Passage A is the winner, but it does have one minor weakness. However, Passage B’s weaknesses are far more devastating.”

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

The 10-30-5 Rule:
10 Minutes (Plan): Read, choose a winner, and write a 5-paragraph outline on the scratchpad.
30 Minutes (Write): Expand your outline into full sentences. Type fast!
5 Minutes (Edit): Proofread for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Master “Signal Phrases”: Use phrases like “According to the author…”, “The text explicitly states…”, “As evidenced by paragraph 4…” to prove you are evaluating the text and not giving a personal opinion.
Attack “Logical Fallacies”: When analyzing the losing passage, don’t just say “it has no facts.” Use specific terminology. For example: “Passage B attempts to persuade the reader by using an ad hominem attack against the mayor, rather than discussing the actual policy.”

    • Evidence & Analysis.
  • Paragraph 4: Body 3 (Flaws in the Losing Argument)
    • Topic Sentence: တစ်ဖက်စာရေးသူ၏ အားနည်းချက် သို့မဟုတ် ယုတ္တိဗေဒ အမှား (Logical Fallacy) ကို ထောက်ပြခြင်း။
    • Evidence from losing passage.
    • Analysis on why it is weak.
  • Paragraph 5: Conclusion (နိဂုံး)
    • Restate Thesis: Thesis ကို စကားလုံး ပြောင်းပြီး ပြန်ရေးပါ။
    • Final Thought:

Summary vs. Evaluation

❌ Wrong Outline: “I think students should wear uniforms because it saves money for my parents.” (ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဘဝ အတွေ့အကြုံကို ရေးခြင်း) ✅ Right Outline: “Passage A’s argument is stronger because it provides economic data showing that uniforms reduce household expenses by 20%.”
Writing a Summary Instead of an Analysis (ဝေဖန်ခြင်းမပြုဘဲ အကျဉ်းချုပ် ရေးခြင်း)
❌ Wrong Outline: Body 1 (Passage A က ယူနီဖောင်းကောင်းတယ်ပြောတယ်) -> Body 2 (Passage B က မကောင်းဘူးပြောတယ်) -> Conclusion (ဒါကြောင့် သဘောထား ကွဲလွဲနေကြတယ်)။ ✅ Right Outline: Body 1 (Passage A ရဲ့ Evidence တွေက ခိုင်လုံတယ်) -> Body 2 (ဘယ်လိုခိုင်လုံတာလဲဆိုတော့ Statistics သုံးထားလို့ပဲ) -> Body 3 (Passage B ကကျတော့ ခံစားချက် Opinion တွေကိုပဲ သုံးထားလို့ စာဖတ်သူကို မသိမ်းသွင်းနိုင်ဘူး)။ အမှား၏ သဘောသဘာဝ: အချက်အလက်တွေကို ဝေဖန်တာ (Critical Thinking) ထက်၊ ပေးထားတဲ့ စာကို အမှားအယွင်းမရှိအောင် ပြန်ကူးရေးတာ (Rote learning) ကို ပိုအားသန်ကြလို့ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။
❌ Wrong: Luckily, Passage A gives us some numbers. / Sadly, Passage B has no facts. ✅ Right: Furthermore, Passage A incorporates statistical data. / Conversely, Passage B lacks factual support.
Ignoring the “Winning” Side’s Flaws OR the “Losing” Side’s Strengths

(Pro-Tips)

The 10-30-5 Rule (အချိန်စီမံခန့်ခွဲမှု ပုံသေနည်း):
Master the “Signal Phrases”: မိမိရဲ့ ကိုယ်ပိုင် အာဘော် မဟုတ်ဘူး ဆိုတာကို ပြဖို့ Outline ကတည်းက Signal phrases တွေကို အသင့်ပြင်ထားပါ။ ဥပမာ – According to the author…, The text explicitly states…, As evidenced by paragraph 4… ဒီစကားလုံးတွေက သင့်ရဲ့ Essay ကို Professional ဖြစ်စေပါတယ်။
Attack the “Logical Fallacies”:
