Grammar & Sentence Structure

Hello everyone! Today we will explore the most critical topic in the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) test: Grammar & Sentence Structure.

This topic is not only essential for the GED but also serves as a vital foundation for international English proficiency exams like IELTS and TOEFL. Myanmar students often face challenges when studying English sentence structure. This is because the Myanmar language follows a Subject-Object-Verb (S-O-V) structure, whereas English uses a Subject-Verb-Object (S-V-O) structure. Furthermore, while Myanmar connects clauses by attaching suffixes to verbs (e.g., သောကြောင့် – because, လျှင် – if), English requires the placement of Conjunctions at the beginning or in the middle of clauses, making the underlying logic completely different.

In this lesson, we will systematically study everything from basic sentence structures to advanced usages.

Key Concepts & Definitions

To truly understand English sentence structure, you must master the following 10 key terms:

1. Subject: The main person or thing doing the action in a sentence.
(e.g., The student studies hard.)
2. Predicate: The part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject.
(e.g., The student studies hard.)
3. Clause: A group of words containing a Subject and a Verb.
4. Independent Clause: A clause that can stand alone as a complete, meaningful sentence.
(e.g., She passed the exam.)
5. Dependent Clause: A clause that contains a Subject and Verb but cannot stand alone. It is an incomplete thought.
(e.g., Because she studied hard…)
6. Coordinating Conjunction: Connectors that join two independent clauses. Remember the acronym FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).
7. Subordinating Conjunction: Connectors that start a Dependent Clause and link it to an Independent Clause.
(e.g., although, because, since, if, unless)
8. Sentence Fragment: An incomplete sentence error, missing a subject, a verb, or consisting only of a dependent clause.
9. Run-on Sentence: An error where two independent clauses are joined together without proper punctuation or a conjunction.
10. Comma Splice: A specific type of run-on error where two independent clauses are joined purely by a comma (,).

Detailed Explanation: The 4 Sentence Structures

Think of clauses like train cars. An Independent Clause is an Engine that can run on its own. A Dependent Clause is a Cargo Car that cannot move unless attached to an Engine.

1. Simple Sentence

Consists of just ONE Independent Clause. (One train engine running alone).

Structure: Subject + Verb + (Object/Complement)

Logic: Used to state a single, direct idea clearly.

2. Compound Sentence

Consists of two or more Independent Clauses. (Two train engines chained together).

Structure: [Independent] + , + [FANBOYS] + [Independent]. OR [Independent] + ; + [Independent].

Logic: Used to connect two ideas of equal importance.

3. Complex Sentence

Consists of one Independent Clause and at least one Dependent Clause. (An engine pulling a cargo car).

Structure 1: [Subordinating Conjunction] + [Dependent], + [Independent].

Structure 2: [Independent] + [Subordinating Conjunction] + [Dependent]. (No comma needed here).

Logic: Used to show that one idea depends on another (cause/effect, time).

4. Compound-Complex Sentence

A combination of the above: At least two Independent Clauses and at least one Dependent Clause.

Logic: Used for expressing long, highly detailed information, common in Academic Writing.

Comparison Table: Compound vs Complex

Feature Compound Sentence Complex Sentence
Clauses Included Independent + Independent Independent + Dependent
Conjunctions Used FANBOYS Subordinating (Because, If, Although…)
Relationship Equal importance Unequal importance (One explains the other)
Punctuation Rule A comma (,) is required before FANBOYS. Comma needed if starting with Dependent Clause. Not needed if in the middle.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. The Double Conjunction Mistake

Psychology: Direct translation from native languages often results in using two conjunctions (e.g., Although + but) for the same idea.

❌ Wrong: Although she studied hard, but she failed the test. ✅ Right: Although she studied hard, she failed the test.
2. The Comma Splice

Psychology: Using a comma just to indicate a “pause” in speaking, illegally joining two full sentences.

❌ Wrong: The weather was raining heavily, we canceled the trip. ✅ Right: The weather was raining heavily, so we canceled the trip.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (GED, IELTS 7.0+, TOEFL)

  • Sentence Variety: Do not just use simple or “and/but/so” compound sentences. Mix in complex sentences to show grammatical range.
  • Master the Semicolon (;): Replacing “and” or “so” with a semicolon between closely related sentences instantly elevates your writing to an academic level.
  • Use Advanced Subordinators: Swap out “because” or “if” for advanced alternatives like “provided that”, “inasmuch as”, or “whereas”.

Detailed Explanation

1. Simple Sentence (ရိုးရိုးဝါကျ)

Simple Sentence တစ်ခုဆိုတာ Independent Clause တစ်ခုတည်းနဲ့ ဖွဲ့စည်းထားတာပါ။ ရထားခေါင်းတွဲ တစ်တွဲတည်း ပြေးနေတာနဲ့ တူပါတယ်။

ဖွဲ့စည်းပုံ: Subject + Verb + (Object/Complement)

ယုတ္တိ: အကြောင်းအရာ တစ်ခုတည်းကို ရှင်းရှင်းလင်းလင်း တိုက်ရိုက် ပြောချင်တဲ့အခါ သုံးပါတယ်။

2. Compound Sentence (ပေါင်းစပ်ဝါကျ)

Compound Sentence ဆိုတာ Independent Clause နှစ်ခု (သို့မဟုတ်) နှစ်ခုထက်ပိုပြီး ပေါင်းစပ်ထားတာပါ။ ရထားခေါင်းတွဲ နှစ်ခုကို သံကြိုး (Conjunction) နဲ့ တွဲလိုက်တာနဲ့ တူပါတယ်။

ဖွဲ့စည်းပုံ: [Independent Clause 1] + , (comma) + [FANBOYS] + [Independent Clause 2].
(သို့မဟုတ်): [Independent Clause 1] + ; (semicolon) + [Independent Clause 2].

ယုတ္တိ: အရေးပါမှု တန်းတူရှိတဲ့ အကြောင်းအရာ နှစ်ခုကို ဆက်စပ်ပေးချင်တဲ့အခါ သုံးပါတယ်။

3. Complex Sentence (ရှုပ်ထွေးဝါကျ)

Complex Sentence ကတော့ Independent Clause တစ်ခုနဲ့ Dependent Clause တစ်ခု (သို့) တစ်ခုထက်ပိုပြီး တွဲထားတာပါ။ ရထားခေါင်းတွဲ တစ်ခုကို ရထားနောက်တွဲ တစ်ခု (သို့) အများကြီး ချိတ်ဆွဲထားတာနဲ့ တူပါတယ်။

ဖွဲ့စည်းပုံ (၁): [Subordinating Conjunction] + [Dependent Clause] + , (comma) + [Independent Clause].
ဖွဲ့စည်းပုံ (၂): [Independent Clause] + [Subordinating Conjunction] + [Dependent Clause]. (ဒီပုံစံမှာ Comma မလိုပါဘူး)

Common Mistakes & Burmese Interference

1. The Double Conjunction Mistake (စကားဆက် နှစ်ခုထပ်သုံးခြင်း)

Psychology: မြန်မာစာမှာ “သူ စာကြိုးစားပေမယ့်, ဒါပေမယ့် စာမေးပွဲ ကျတယ်” လို့ ပြောလေ့ရှိပါတယ်။ အင်္ဂလိပ်လို ပြန်တဲ့အခါ Although ရော, but ရော ထည့်ရေးတတ်ကြပါတယ်။

❌ Wrong: Although she studied hard, but she failed the test. ✅ Right: Although she studied hard, she failed the test.
2. The Comma Splice (ကော်မာဖြင့် မှားယွင်းဆက်ခြင်း)

Psychology: ဝါကျနှစ်ခုဆက်ချင်ရင် မြန်မာလို ခဏရပ်တဲ့ သဘောမျိုးနဲ့ Comma (,) လေးပဲ ခံပြီး ဆက်ရေးချလိုက်တဲ့ အကျင့်ပါ။

❌ Wrong: The weather was raining heavily, we canceled the trip. ✅ Right: The weather was raining heavily, so we canceled the trip.
3. Sentence Fragments (မပြည့်စုံသော ဝါကျများ)

Psychology: မြန်မာစကားပြောမှာ “ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ မိုးရွာနေလို့လေ” ဆိုပြီး စကားဖြတ်ပြောလေ့ ရှိပါတယ်။ ဒါကို အင်္ဂလိပ်လို Full Stop (.) ချပြီး တိုက်ရိုက် ရေးတတ်ကြပါတယ်။

❌ Wrong: I stayed at home. Because it was raining. ✅ Right: I stayed at home because it was raining.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers
