Mastering GED RLA: Fact vs. Opinion & Evaluating Arguments
Hello everyone! Today, we are focusing on an essential topic for the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) exam: Fact vs. Opinion and Evaluating Arguments.
International English proficiency exams prioritize Critical Thinking. For students from Myanmar, this section can be tricky. In traditional Myanmar culture, statements made by elders, superiors, or teachers are often accepted as facts, even when they are simply opinions. In English academia, however, any claim lacking solid evidence is considered weak, regardless of who makes it. Therefore, we must learn to distinguish between facts and opinions to accurately evaluate the strength of an author’s argument.
Key Concepts & Definitions
To differentiate between fact and opinion and analyze arguments effectively, you must first master these 10 essential terms:
Detailed Explanation
1. The “Prove It” Test
To determine if a statement is a fact or an opinion, ask yourself: “Can I test, observe, or verify this to prove if it is true or false?”
- Fact: “Myanmar gained independence in 1948.” (You can check historical records to verify this. Even if it said “1950,” it would be a “False Fact,” not an opinion, because it can still be proven wrong).
- Opinion: “Gaining independence is the happiest moment for a country.” (Happiness cannot be objectively measured or proven; it is an opinion).
2. Signal Words for Opinions
Authors often disguise their opinions as facts. If you see the following words, the statement is highly likely an opinion:
- Value words: Best, worst, beautiful, ugly, good, bad, terrible, wonderful.
- Obligation words: Should, must, ought to, need to.
- Belief words: I think, I believe, it seems, apparently, likely.
3. How to Evaluate an Argument
Use these three steps to assess the strength of an author’s argument:
- Step 1: Identify the Claim: What is the author trying to convince you of? (e.g., Schools should ban smartphones).
- Step 2: Examine the Evidence: What proof do they offer? Is it factual data or subjective opinion? (e.g., A study showing a 30% drop in grades vs. a feeling that phones look unprofessional).
- Step 3: Evaluate the Connection: Does the evidence logically and directly support the claim?
Comparison Table: Fact vs. Opinion
| Feature | Fact | Opinion |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Objective | Subjective |
| Verifiability | Can be proven true or false using research or records. | Cannot be proven; relies entirely on feelings or beliefs. |
| Vocabulary | Numbers, dates, specific names, locations. | Adjectives (best, worst), Modals (should, must). |
| Role in an Argument | Strengthens the argument when used as Evidence. | Weakens the argument if used as the primary Evidence. |
| Example | “The Earth revolves around the Sun.” | “Sunsets are the most beautiful sight.” |

Category 1: Identifying Facts vs. Opinions
Category 2: Evaluating Argument Strength
Evidence: “The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 AM to ensure students get adequate sleep for optimal brain function.”
Evidence: “I hate seeing plastic bags blowing in the wind; they are so ugly.”
Category 3: Identifying Bias and Fallacies
Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)
❌ Wrong Thought: The principal said the new uniforms are the best, so it must be a fact. ✅ Right Thought: No matter who says it, “the best” is a value judgment. It is an opinion. Psychology: Culturally, students may defer to authority figures, accepting their opinions as unchallengeable facts.
❌ Wrong Thought: “The bridge, built in 1998, is the most beautiful structure in the city.” This sentence has a date, so it is a pure fact. ✅ Right Thought: The date (1998) is a fact, but “most beautiful” is an opinion. The sentence is a mix of fact and opinion. Psychology: The presence of a number or date often tricks readers into assuming the entire sentence is factual.
❌ Wrong Thought: I also hate video games, so the argument banning them is very strong. ✅ Right Thought: Whether I agree or not, the argument provided no factual evidence. Therefore, it is a weak argument. Psychology: Students often rate an argument as “strong” simply because they personally agree with the conclusion, ignoring the lack of actual evidence.
