Mastering GED RLA: Author’s Purpose & Tone

Hello everyone! Today, we are focusing on a vital topic for the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) exam: Author’s Purpose and Tone.

In the GED RLA exam, you will encounter passages ranging from 400 to 900 words, including both Informational texts and Literary texts. Understanding why the author wrote the passage (Purpose) and how they feel about the subject (Tone) is the key to answering many comprehension questions correctly.

For many students from Myanmar, this section can be tricky because the author’s tone is rarely stated explicitly; you must “read between the lines.” Therefore, we will learn how to analyze word choice to uncover the author’s true intentions.

Key Concepts & Definitions

To master this topic, you must first clearly understand these 10 essential terms:

Author’s Purpose: The primary reason why the author wrote the text. (Often remembered as PIE: Persuade, Inform, Entertain).
Tone: The author’s attitude toward the subject they are writing about.
Persuade (verb): To convince the reader to accept a certain viewpoint or to take a specific action.
Inform (verb): To objectively provide facts, explain a process, or deliver knowledge.
Entertain (verb): To engage the reader’s emotions, make them laugh, or tell a compelling story (e.g., fiction).
Word Choice / Diction: The specific words an author deliberately chooses to convey meaning and establish a tone.
Connotation: The emotional or implied meaning of a word, beyond its literal dictionary definition (e.g., Positive, Negative, Neutral).
Objective Tone: An unbiased, fact-based tone free from the author’s personal feelings or opinions.
Subjective Tone: A tone heavily influenced by the author’s personal feelings, biases, and opinions.
Inference (noun): A logical conclusion drawn by the reader based on clues provided in the text, rather than explicit statements.

Detailed Explanation

1. Identifying Author’s Purpose

When you begin reading, immediately ask: “Why did the author write this passage?” Look for these primary purposes:

  • To Inform: Uses facts, statistics, and historical data. The author’s opinion is usually absent. (e.g., Textbooks, news reports).
  • To Persuade: Uses words like “should,” “must,” “best,” or “worst.” The author builds arguments supported by evidence to change your mind. (e.g., Editorials, political speeches).
  • To Entertain: Features characters, plot lines, and descriptive settings designed to captivate the reader. (e.g., Novels, poetry).
  • To Express Feelings: Focuses on the author’s personal experiences and emotions. (e.g., Diaries, autobiographies).

2. Analyzing Tone

Authors rarely say, “I am angry about this.” Instead, they show it through Word Choice (Diction). Evaluate the connotation of the words they use.

For example, imagine a leader who makes quick decisions:

  • Positive Tone: The author might describe them as “decisive” or “proactive.”
  • Negative Tone: The author might describe them as “bossy” or “domineering.”

By analyzing whether the passage leans heavily on words with positive or negative connotations, you can pinpoint the author’s tone.

3. Tone vs. Mood Comparison

A common trap on the GED is confusing Tone with Mood.

Feature Tone Mood
Definition The Author’s attitude toward the subject. The feeling created in the Reader by the text.
Focus Author-centric Reader-centric (Atmosphere)
How to Find It Analyze Word Choice / Diction. Analyze Setting, descriptive imagery, and events.
Examples Sarcastic, Serious, Objective, Critical. Gloomy, Suspenseful, Joyful, Tense.

Extensive Example Bank

Let’s analyze GED-level sentences to understand the relationship between Purpose, Tone, and Word Choice.

Purpose: To Inform (Neutral / Objective Tone)

“The solar panels generate up to 25% of the facility’s electricity during peak sunlight hours.”
Analysis: The use of statistics (“25%”) without any emotional words shows the purpose is to inform. The tone is completely objective.

Purpose: To Persuade (Subjective / Passionate / Critical Tone)

“We must act immediately to reduce plastic consumption before our oceans become irreversible wastelands.”
Analysis: Strong diction (“must act immediately”, “irreversible wastelands”) is used to persuade the reader. The tone is urgent and alarmed.
“While the new policy claims to help small businesses, it actually creates a labyrinth of impossible regulations.”
Analysis: Words like “claims” and “labyrinth of impossible regulations” reveal a critical and cynical tone aimed at persuading the reader that the policy is bad.

Purpose: To Entertain (Humorous, Sarcastic, or Dramatic Tone)

“Oh, brilliant. Another flat tire. Just what I needed to make this glorious Monday morning absolutely perfect.”
Analysis: A flat tire is bad, but the author uses highly positive words (“brilliant”, “glorious”, “perfect”). This contradiction creates a sarcastic tone, intended to entertain or express frustration humorously.

Tone Shifts

“At first, the initiative seemed promising, offering grants to local artists. However, the stifling bureaucracy soon suffocated any real creativity.”
Analysis: The tone starts positive (“promising”), but the transition word “However” signals a sharp Tone Shift. The diction changes to negative (“stifling”, “suffocated”), resulting in a bitter/critical tone.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Mistaking “Informational” for strictly “Objective”
❌ Wrong Thought: This passage has lots of numbers, so it is just informing me. ✅ Right Thought: Numbers are present, but the author is using them to argue that we “should” change our behavior. This is Persuasive. Psychology: In Myanmar, factual texts are often viewed as purely informational. However, English authors frequently weaponize facts to build persuasive arguments.
2. Missing Sarcasm
❌ Wrong Thought: The author used the words “brilliant” and “perfect,” so they must have a Joyful tone. ✅ Right Thought: A flat tire isn’t perfect. The author is using positive words ironically. The tone is Sarcastic. Psychology: Sarcasm in spoken Myanmar heavily relies on vocal intonation. In reading, you must rely entirely on the logical context to catch verbal irony.
3. Overlooking Transition Words
❌ Wrong Thought: The first sentence was happy, so the whole passage has a positive tone. ✅ Right Thought: I see the word “Yet” in paragraph two. This signals a major Tone Shift. Psychology: L1 interference can cause students to translate word-by-word, missing structural signposts like “However,” “Despite,” or “Nevertheless” that dictate the passage’s true direction.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Analyze Diction for Precision: Knowing a tone is “Negative” is not enough. You must determine if it is Cynical, Skeptical, Pessimistic, or Condescending. Build a strong vocabulary of tone words.
Look for the “Call to Action”: Persuasive passages often end by telling the reader exactly what to do next (e.g., “Vote for…”, “Donate today”). If you see a Call to Action, the primary purpose is to Persuade.
Evaluate Argument Strength (Extended Response): When writing your essay comparing two passages, always evaluate their tone. A passage with an objective tone backed by evidence is generally stronger than a passage relying on a highly emotional, subjective tone.

အသေးစိတ် ရှင်းလင်းချက်များ

၁။ စာရေးသူ၏ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ကို ဖော်ထုတ်ခြင်း (Identifying Author’s Purpose)

စာပိုဒ်တစ်ခုကို ဖတ်လိုက်တာနဲ့ “Why did the author write this passage?”

(Analyzing Tone)

Purpose: To Inform (Neutral / Objective Tone)

“The solar panels generate up to 25% of the facility’s electricity during peak sunlight hours.”

Purpose: To Persuade (Subjective / Passionate / Critical Tone)

“We must act immediately to reduce plastic consumption before our oceans become irreversible wastelands.”
“While the new policy claims to help small businesses, it actually creates a labyrinth of impossible regulations.”

Purpose: To Entertain (Humorous, Sarcastic, or Dramatic Tone)

“Oh, brilliant. Another flat tire. Just what I needed to make this glorious Monday morning absolutely perfect.”

Diction and Tone Shift (လေသံပြောင်းလဲခြင်း)

“At first, the initiative seemed promising, offering grants to local artists. However, the stifling bureaucracy soon suffocated any real creativity.”

(L1 Interference)

မြန်မာကျောင်းသားတွေ GED RLA ဖြေတဲ့အခါ မိခင်ဘာသာစကားရဲ့ လွှမ်းမိုးမှုကြောင့် အောက်ပါ အမှားတွေကို မကြာခဏ လုပ်မိတတ်ကြပါတယ်။

အမှတ်ကောင်းရရှိရန် အကြံပြုချက်များ (Pro-Tips)

Look for the “Call to Action”: Persuasive passages တွေရဲ့ နောက်ဆုံး စာပိုဒ် (Conclusion) မှာ များသောအားဖြင့် စာဖတ်သူကို ဘာလုပ်ပါ ဆိုပြီး တိုက်တွန်းချက် (Call to Action) ပါလေ့ရှိပါတယ်။ အဲ့ဒီအပိုင်းကို သေချာဖတ်ရင် Author’s Purpose ကို အလွယ်တကူ အတည်ပြုနိုင်ပါတယ်။

The proposed construction of the new highway through the Whispering Pines reserve is not merely an infrastructure project; it is an ecological disaster waiting to happen. Proponents of the project argue that it will shave fifteen minutes off the daily commute for suburban workers and stimulate local commerce. However, this marginal convenience comes at a devastating cost.

The reserve is home to several endangered species, including the spotted owl, whose fragile habitats will be permanently bulldozed into oblivion. Furthermore, the runoff from the asphalt will contaminate the local watershed, poisoning the primary drinking water source for three surrounding towns. We cannot allow short-sighted economic interests to bulldoze our natural heritage. It is imperative that citizens attend the town hall meeting on Thursday to demand that the city council reject this catastrophic proposal.

Look at the word choice (diction): “ecological disaster,” “devastating cost,” “bulldozed into oblivion,” “poisoning,” “catastrophic.” These words have highly negative, urgent connotations. The author is deeply worried and firmly against the project.
