Mastering GED Math: Ratios, Proportions, and Rates

Hello! If you have ever compared supermarket prices, read a map, or doubled a recipe, you already think in ratios and rates. On the GED Mathematical Reasoning test, almost every ratio question is a word problem — not a bare equation. That is good news: these are the most practical points on the test.

Here is the catch: GED ratio problems hide inside tables, charts, and short stories. Many Myanmar students say, “I can solve a:b = c:d on paper, but I freeze when the numbers hide in a paragraph.” This lesson fixes exactly that: turning words into setups, choosing between cross-multiplication and the unit-rate method, and dodging the favorite trap — mismatched units.

Key Concepts & Definitions

Learn this vocabulary first — every GED ratio question uses these nine ideas:

Ratio: A comparison of two quantities with the same units, written a:b or a/b (e.g. 3:2). Order is sacred: “boys to girls” ≠ “girls to boys.”
Rate: A comparison of two quantities with different units — km/h, kyats per kilogram, words per minute. A rate always carries its units with it.
Unit Rate: A rate reduced to “per one unit” — 6,000 kyats/kg or 80 km/h. Your best tool for “best buy” and speed questions.
Proportion: An equation stating two ratios (or rates) are equal, e.g. 3/4 = 15/20. Three known numbers + one unknown = set up a proportion.
Cross-Multiplication (Cross Products): In a/b = c/d: a × d = b × c. This turns a fraction equation into a one-step equation — but only when both sides are equal ratios with matching setups.
Scale: A ratio comparing a map/drawing to real life, e.g. 1 cm = 25 km. Scale problems are proportions in disguise: (map)/(real) must match on both sides.
Direct Proportion: Two quantities rising/falling together at a constant ratio (y = kx): more hours → more pay. Most GED proportion questions are direct proportions.
Inverse Proportion: Two quantities where one grows while the other shrinks — more workers → fewer hours. If doubling one halves the other, plain cross-multiplication fails; invert one ratio first.
Part-to-Part vs. Part-to-Whole: 2:3 describes parts (2 of A per 3 of B), but the whole is 2 + 3 = 5 — so A is 2/5 of the whole, not 2/3. The GED loves testing this.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

(1) Setting up ratios in the right ORDER — labels save you

Every ratio disaster starts with numbers in the wrong order. The rule: read the words left to right, and write the numbers in the same order. “The ratio of flour to sugar is 3:1” → flour/sugar = 3/1. Always write the units as labels: they must match on both sides of the = sign. If one side says “kyats per kilogram” and the other says “kilograms per kyat,” the labels just told you the setup is backwards.

(2) Solving proportions by cross-multiplication, step by step

For a true proportion — two equal ratios — cross-multiplication is fastest:

  1. Write it with matching setups: 3/4 = x/20 (both sides “part over whole”).
  2. Cross-multiply: 3 × 20 = 4 × x → 60 = 4x.
  3. Solve: divide both sides by 4 → x = 15.
  4. Check: 15/20 = 3/4? Divide top and bottom by 5 → 3/4 ✓.

The check takes five seconds and catches every careless slip.

(3) The unit-rate method — reduce to “per one,” then scale up

For “best buy,” price, and speed questions, think in unit rates: divide to find the cost (or speed) of ONE unit, then scale up.

Example: Bag A = 500 g for 3,200 kyats → 6,400 kyats/kg; Bag B = 1 kg for 6,000 kyats → 6,000 kyats/kg. Same units — Bag B wins. “Best buy” always means “lowest unit rate.” (Full walkthrough in Example 1.)

(4) Scale and map problems — match the units on both sides

A map scale like “1 cm = 25 km” is a proportion waiting to happen: (map)/(real) = (map)/(real), with matching units. Example: two cities are 4.5 cm apart on the map → 1/25 = 4.5/x → x = 112.5 km. The classic trap: writing “112.5 cm.” Your setup’s units say kilometers — read them and write them in your answer.

Comparison: GED Applied Ratios vs Myanmar Textbook Ratio Drills

Learned ratios from Myanmar school drills? The GED feels different. Here is what changes:

Feature GED Applied Ratios Myanmar Textbook Ratio Drills
Problem context Unit prices, map scales, recipes, travel time — always a story. Abstract “simplify a:b” or “find x in a:b = c:d” with bare numbers.
Units Track units (kyats/kg, km/h, min vs h). Mismatched units are the #1 trap. Usually unitless; units are treated as decoration.
Method rewarded Unit-rate reasoning and flexible setup — cross-multiplication is one tool, not the only tool. Memorized cross-multiplication steps, applied mechanically.
Data format Numbers hidden in tables, charts, paragraphs — you extract and build the ratio yourself. All numbers given directly in the problem statement.
Traps Choices include the “flipped ratio” and “unconverted units” results — your careless mistakes, priced as distractors. Traps are rare; the main enemy is simple arithmetic error.

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Five GED-style problems, easy to hard. Cover the answer, try each first, then compare with the step-by-step reasoning.

Example 1: Best Buy — Rice Bags
At a Yangon supermarket, Bag A contains 500 g of rice and costs 3,200 kyats; Bag B contains 1 kg and costs 6,000 kyats. Which bag is the better buy?

A. Bag A, because 3,200 is less than 6,000
B. Bag B
C. They are the same value
D. Cannot be determined

Solution: B. Bag B (6,000 kyats/kg vs 6,400 kyats/kg).

Step-by-step: 1) Never compare different quantities directly — that is the trap (A). 2) 500 g = 0.5 kg. 3) A: 3,200 ÷ 0.5 = 6,400 kyats/kg. 4) B: 6,000 ÷ 1 = 6,000 kyats/kg. 5) 6,000 < 6,400 — Bag B wins. Lowest unit rate always wins.
Example 2: Map Scale
A road map uses the scale 1 cm = 25 km. On the map, Mandalay and a nearby town are 6.4 cm apart. What is the actual distance?

A. 150 km
B. 31.4 km
C. 160 km
D. 164 km

Solution: C. 160 km.

Step-by-step: 1) Scale proportion, matching units: 1/25 = 6.4/x. 2) Cross-multiply: x = 25 × 6.4. 3) 25 × 6 = 150; 25 × 0.4 = 10; x = 160 km. 4) Traps: A rounds 6.4 to 6; D adds instead of multiplying; B divides the wrong way.
Example 3: Speed, Distance, and Time
A bus travels 240 km in 3 hours at a constant speed. At the same speed, how many hours will it take to travel 400 km?

A. 4 hours
B. 4.5 hours
C. 6 hours
D. 5 hours

Solution: D. 5 hours.

Step-by-step: 1) Speed: 240 ÷ 3 = 80 km/h. 2) Time = 400 ÷ 80 = 5 hours. (Or 240/3 = 400/x → x = 5.) 3) Check: 400 < 2 × 240, so time < 6 hours — 5 fits. C traps students who round 400 up to 480.
Example 4: Part-to-Whole Mixture (Hardest)
A juice stall mixes concentrate and water in the ratio 1:4 to make fresh orange juice. How many liters of concentrate are needed to make 2.5 liters of juice?

A. 0.625 liters
B. 0.5 liters
C. 2 liters
D. 1.25 liters

Solution: B. 0.5 liters.

Step-by-step: 1) 1:4 is part-to-part: 1 + 4 = 5 parts total. 2) Concentrate = 1/5 of the whole, not 1/4 — A (2.5 ÷ 4 = 0.625) is the classic trap. 3) (1/5) × 2.5 = 0.5 liters. 4) Verify: 0.5 + 2.0 = 2.5 ✓ and 0.5:2.0 = 1:4 ✓.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Flipping the ratio order
❌ Wrong: The question asks for “flour to sugar” (3:1); the student writes sugar/flour = 3/1. ✅ Correct: flour/sugar = 3/1 — write the numbers in the exact order the words appear. Why it happens: Myanmar price tags read “ဆန် ၅၀၀ ဂရမ် ၃၂၀၀ ကျပ်” (item, quantity, price), so students grab numbers without locking the order to the question’s wording. The GED phrases order deliberately — read it, label it, keep it.
2. Cross-multiplying mismatched pairs
❌ Wrong: From a/b = c/d, writing a × c = b × d (numerator × numerator). ✅ Correct: a × d = b × c — diagonal pairs, forming an X across the equals sign. Why it happens: “Cross-multiplication” was memorized from school drills without the visual of the X. Draw the X every time until automatic: top-left × bottom-right.
3. Unit mismatch — mixing minutes with hours, cm with m
❌ Wrong: Speed = 120 km á 30 minutes = “4 km/h.” ✅ Correct: Convert first — 30 minutes = 0.5 hours, so 120 á 0.5 = 240 km/h. Why it happens: Myanmar textbook drills are usually unitless, so students never built the convert-first habit. On the GED, one choice is always the unconverted result. Convert first, calculate second.
4. Confusing part-to-part with part-to-whole
❌ Wrong: Ratio 2:3 → “2/3 of the mixture is ingredient A.” ✅ Correct: The whole is 2 + 3 = 5 parts, so A is 2/5 of the whole. Why it happens: The colon looks like a fraction bar, so students read 2:3 as 2/3. Remember: the colon separates parts; the fraction needs the whole underneath — always add the parts first.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Label everything: Write units into your proportion (km/h = km/h). Labels make a wrong setup visible and fixable in seconds.
Convert units BEFORE cross-multiplying: Minutes → hours, grams → kilograms, cm → m. One conversion line at the start eliminates the test’s favorite trap.
Estimate reasonableness: If 2 kg of chicken costs 18,000 kyats, 5 kg cannot cost less. Wrong-order answers almost always fail this test.
Keep the unit-rate method as your universal fallback: Confused by a proportion setup? Drop back to “find the per-one value, then scale.” It works for best-buy, speed, recipes, and scale alike.
Match the answer’s units to the question’s units: If the question asks “how many hours,” your answer must be in hours — not km/h, not minutes.

အမှတ်ကောင်းရရှိရန် အကြံပြုချက်များ (Pro-Tips)
