Mastering GED Math: Probability, Mean, Median, and Mode

Hello everyone! Today we master two topics on every GED Mathematical Reasoning test: Probability and Statistics (mean, median, mode) — about one-quarter of the exam, and among its most predictable topics.

Myanmar students often find these unfamiliar — not because they are hard, but because our schools drill algebra while neglecting real-life data problems. The GED loves weather forecasts, surveys, and raffle tickets. Learn the formulas and the test-maker’s favorite traps, and these become the fastest points on exam day.

Key Concepts & Definitions

One misunderstood word can cost you the whole question. Define each term precisely:

Probability: A number from 0 to 1 measuring how likely an event is. 0 = impossible, 1 = certain. Writable as a fraction, decimal, or percent.
Sample Space: ALL possible outcomes of an experiment. Flipping a coin → {Heads, Tails}.
Event: The specific outcome(s) you care about. “Rolling an even number” → {2, 4, 6}.
Mean (Average): Sum of values ÷ number of values.
Median: The MIDDLE value after sorting smallest to largest. With an even count, it is the mean of the two middle values.
Mode: The MOST FREQUENT value. Can have one, two (bimodal), or no mode.
Range: Maximum − minimum. Measures how “spread out” data is.
Weighted Mean: Each value × its weight, summed, then ÷ total weight. Used for grades and prices.
Theoretical vs. Experimental Probability: Theoretical = what should happen (formula); experimental = what actually happened (observed ÷ trials).

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

Probability — “Favorable over Total”

Nearly every GED probability question uses one formula:

P(event) = (favorable outcomes) ÷ (total possible outcomes)

Two-step counting: (1) count what you want, (2) count everything possible. Bag with 3 red and 7 blue marbles → P(red) = 3 ÷ 10 = 3/10 = 30%.

Two extra tools: the Complement Rule — P(not E) = 1 − P(E); and the percent check — convert to a percent. Over 100% = arithmetic mistake.

The Mean — Add, Count, Divide

Three steps, never changes: add all values → count them → divide. Scores 82, 90, 78, 94 → sum 344 → ÷ 4 → mean 86.

The GED’s favorite twist is the missing-value problem: “Mean of five numbers is 20; four are 18, 22, 19, 21. Find the fifth.” Work backwards: target total = 5 × 20 = 100; known sum = 80; missing = 20.

Weighted mean — homework (weight 1) 90, midterm (2) 80, final (3) 85: (90 + 160 + 255) ÷ 6 = 505 ÷ 6 ≈ 84.2.

The Median — Sort First, Then Find the Middle

Stage one is non-negotiable: sort smallest to largest. Odd count → the single middle number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9 → 5). Even count → mean of the two middle numbers (2, 4, 8, 10 → 6).

The median resists outliers. Nine workers earn $20/hr, the boss $500/hr — the mean looks absurd, the median ($20) tells the truth. “Best represents” + outlier → choose the median.

Mode and Range — Quick Reads

Mode = most frequent value. In 5, 7, 5, 9, 5, 7 → mode is 5. Two values tied → bimodal; all values appear once → no mode. Range = max − min (here 9 − 5 = 4); larger range = more spread out.

Comparison: Mean vs. Median vs. Mode

The GED often asks you to choose the right measure:

FeatureMeanMedianMode
What it isSum ÷ countMiddle value after sortingMost frequent value
Outlier effectStrongly pulledBarely affected (resistant)Usually unaffected
Best when…Symmetric data, no extremes (test scores)Skewed data / outliers (incomes)Categorical data (favorite color)
GED question stem“What is the average…?”“Which best represents…?” (outlier present)“Which occurs most often?”
Myanmar contrastMatriculation math drills algebra identities but rarely asks you to interpret data. The GED reverses this: computation is easy (calculator allowed) — you must decide which measure fits, a reasoning skill, not memorization.

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Five problems, warm-up to exam-level. Study the reasoning, not just the answer.

Example 1: Basic Probability
A box has 4 green, 6 yellow, and 10 blue balls. One ball is drawn at random. P(yellow) = ?

A. 1/5
B. 3/10
C. 3/5
D. 1/2

Solution: B. 3/10

Step-by-step: Favorable = 6; total = 20; 6/20 simplifies to 3/10. Always reduce — GED choices are in lowest terms.
Example 2: Complement
P(rain) = 70%. What is P(no rain)?

A. 70%
B. 30%
C. 130%
D. 7%

Solution: B. 30%

Step-by-step: 100% − 70% = 30%. Choice C is impossible — eliminate anything over 100% instantly.
Example 3: Missing Value Mean
Quiz scores: 88, 92, 76, 84. What 5th-quiz score gives a mean of exactly 85?

A. 85
B. 80
C. 90
D. 95

Solution: A. 85

Step-by-step: Target total = 85 × 5 = 425. Known sum = 340. Needed = 425 − 340 = 85. “Work backwards from the target total” solves every such problem.
Example 4: Median with Outlier
Nine employees earn $18/hr; the manager earns $200/hr. Which is true?

A. The mean best represents the typical wage.
B. The median wage is $18.
C. The mode is $200.
D. The range is $18.

Solution: B. The median wage is $18.

Step-by-step: 10 values: nine 18’s + one 200. The two middle values are both 18 → median 18. The $200 outlier drags the mean up (A wrong); mode is $18 (C wrong); range = 200 − 18 = 182 (D wrong).
Example 5: Weighted Mean
Final grade: homework 20% (score 90), quizzes 30% (score 80), final exam 50% (score 90). Final grade?

A. 86
B. 87
C. 86.4
D. 88

Solution: B. 87

Step-by-step: (90×0.2) + (80×0.3) + (90×0.5) = 18 + 24 + 45 = 87. Sanity check: answer must lie between 80 and 90 ✓.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. “Median” Without Sorting
❌ Wrong: 9, 2, 7 → “median is 2” ✅ Correct: Sort → 2, 7, 9 → 7 Why: Speed habit — students grab the middle of the list as given. The GED lists data out of order deliberately. Sort, THEN pick.
2. Dividing by the Wrong Count
❌ Wrong: Mean of 80, 90, 70 + missing 4th value → dividing by 3 ✅ Correct: Divide by the TOTAL count: target = 85 × 4 = 340 Why it happens: Students divide by the values they can see. Always ask first: “How many values in total?”
3. Writing Probability as Odds (3:1)
❌ Wrong: “Probability is 3 to 1” ✅ Correct: P = 3/4 Why it happens: Everyday speech uses odds language. The GED accepts only fractions/decimals/percents between 0 and 1. Answer > 1 = automatically wrong.
4. Using the Mean with an Outlier
❌ Wrong: “Average income is $5,000/month” (one rich family distorts it) ✅ Correct: Use the median Why: “Average” is the only measure many students know. “Best represents” + extreme value → median.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

The 100% Sanity Check: Convert every probability to a percent. Over 100% = error.
Sort on Paper: For median/range, rewrite numbers smallest-to-largest first.
Backsolve Missing Values: Target total = mean × count → subtract known sum.
STAT Mode for Long Lists: 6+ values → TI-30XS STAT mode, read x̄ directly. (See our TI-30XS lesson!)
“Best Represents” = Median. Outlier present → don’t compute the mean.
