Mastering GED Math: Linear Equations, Inequalities, and Graphs
Hello, future GED graduates! On the GED Math test, straight lines and their graphs appear everywhere — in algebra, in phone-bill and taxi-fare word problems, even in Science passages with charts. Lines are the most tested graph shape on the GED.
Good news: the GED rarely asks you to draw a perfect graph — it asks you to READ graphs and equations. What does the slope tell you about two internet plans? At how many GB do they cost the same? Which number is the base fee, which is the per-GB charge? Read the story inside an equation — the rate and the starting value — and you can beat most of these questions.
Key Concepts & Definitions
Key vocabulary — the GED loves testing these words:
Detailed Explanation & Strategy
1. Slope — Rise Over Run, and What It Really Means
Slope answers: “For every 1 step right, how many steps up (or down)?” slope = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁) = rise ÷ run
Example — slope through A(2, 3) and B(6, 11): rise = 11 − 3 = 8; run = 6 − 2 = 4; slope = 8 ÷ 4 = 2. The GED tests slope visually — read left to right: positive slope climbs uphill ↗ (cost rises per km); negative slope falls downhill ↘ (a prepaid balance draining); zero slope is flat → (a fixed fee that never changes).
GED traps: computing (x₂ − x₁) ÷ (y₂ − y₁) — upside down. Always put the y-difference on top; keep point order consistent.
2. Reading y = mx + b — The Rate and the Starting Value
Read y = mx + b as a story in one line: m is the rate (what you pay per unit), b is the starting value (what you pay at x = 0). “Per” → m; “base fee” → b.
Example — 2,000 kyats per GB plus a 5,000 kyats base fee. With d = GB, C = cost: m = 2,000, b = 5,000 → C = 2000d + 5000. For 4 GB: C = 2000 × 4 + 5000 = 13,000 kyats. The GED loves asking “In C = 500d + 1500, what does 1500 represent?” — the base fee (b), the part of the cost that doesn’t depend on distance.
3. Graphing Quickly — The Intercept Method (Cover-Up)
You need only two points for a line — the intercepts are easiest. The “cover-up” trick for 2x + 3y = 12: cover “2x” → 3y = 12 → y = 4, giving y-intercept (0, 4); cover “3y” → 2x = 12 → x = 6, giving x-intercept (6, 0). Plot both, draw the line. Verify: x = 3 gives 2(3) + 3y = 12 → y = 2, and (3, 2) sits right between your intercepts ✓.
GED reality check: you usually pick from four graphs. Eliminate by the y-intercept alone — cross out every graph that doesn’t start at b.
4. Solving Inequalities — Same Steps, One Crucial Rule
Solve like an equation, with one golden rule: × or ÷ by a NEGATIVE flips the sign. Adding/subtracting never flips.
Example: −2x + 5 > 13. Subtract 5: −2x > 8. Divide by −2 (negative!): flip → x < −4. Check x = −5: −2(−5) + 5 = 15 > 13 ✓. The trap (unflipped) x > −4 fails: x = 0 gives 5 > 13 ✗. On a number line, x < −4 is an open circle at −4 shaded left; x ≤ −4 uses a filled circle.
Why the flip? 2 < 3 is true; multiply by −1 → −2 and −3, and −2 > −3. Negatives reverse number order, so the sign reverses too.
Comparison: GED Graph-Reading vs Myanmar Algebra-Manipulation Habits
Myanmar schooling trains excellent symbolic manipulators — but the GED tests something different: reading meaning out of the symbols.
| Feature | GED: Graph-Reading Mindset | Myanmar Habit: Manipulation Mindset |
|---|---|---|
| What’s tested | Interpret slope & intercept in a story — “What does the 500 mean?” | Solve for x symbolically, no story attached |
| Graphs | Read, compare, match graphs to stories | Plot points mechanically; rarely explain what the graph means |
| Inequalities | Number-line meaning — which values work? Test a value | Memorized symbol rules; the sign-flip rule is the #1 casualty |
| Word problems | Build y = mx + b from context, then interpret it | Translate-and-solve drills that stop at the numeric answer |
| Calculator (TI-30XS) | Allowed — plug values in and verify your answer | No-calculator culture; answers trusted without checking |
Keep your manipulation speed — but add the reader’s eye. The student who asks “what does this number mean?” wins.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)
❌ Wrong: −3x > 9 → x > −3 (sign kept) ✅ Correct: −3x > 9 → x < −3 (flipped — divided by −3) Why it happens: Equation-solving was learned as a ritual — “move the number across” — so the flip rule was never understood. Fix: test one value in the original (x = −4: 12 > 9 ✓).
❌ Wrong: Calling a left-to-right falling line “increasing.” ✅ Correct: A falling line has NEGATIVE slope — values decrease as x grows. Why it happens: Students “feel” steepness without checking direction; slope is usually only computed, rarely read off a picture. Fix: trace left to right and ask “uphill or downhill?” first.
❌ Wrong: “For the x-intercept, set x = 0.” (That finds the y-intercept!) ✅ Correct: X-intercept → set y = 0 (it’s on the x-axis, so y is zero). Y-intercept → set x = 0. Why it happens: The names sound backwards — and GED distractors always include the swapped answer. Fix: chant “X-intercept, Y equals zero” and always write (x, y) pairs.
❌ Wrong: In C = 500d + 1500, “1500 is the charge per kilometer.” ✅ Correct: 1500 is the base fare (b, at d = 0); 500 is the per-km rate (m). Why it happens: Numbers are grabbed without labeling — a habit from drills where only the final number matters. Fix: write “m = ___” and “b = ___” before writing any equation.

၂။ y = mx + b ကို ဖတ်ခြင်း — နှုန်းနဲ့ အစတန်ဖိုး
y = mx + b ကို တစ်ကြောင်းတည်းဇာတ်လမ်း လို့ ဖတ်ပါ: m က နှုန်း (တစ်ယူနစ်ကို ဘယ်လောက်ပေးရသလဲ)၊ b က အစတန်ဖိုး (x = 0 မှာတောင် ပေးရတဲ့ပမာဏ)။ “Per” → m; “အခြေခံကြေး” → b။
