Mastering GED Math: Functions

Functions appear in about 1 in 6 GED Math questions — usually as a formula to evaluate, a table to read, or a real-life rule (a taxi fare, a phone plan). The good news: the GED never asks for abstract function theory. If you can substitute a number into a formula and read a table, you can earn these points.

Key Concepts

Function: a rule that assigns each input exactly one output. Notation f(x) is read “f of x” — it is NOT f times x.
Input (x) / Output (f(x)): the number you put in / the result that comes out. In f(5) = 13, the input is 5 and the output is 13.
Evaluating a function: replace every x with the given number (inside parentheses!), then compute. f(x) = 4x + 3 → f(6) = 4(6) + 3 = 27.
Function table: an x-column and an f(x)-column. Read across a row: each pair is one input-output match.
Vertical line test: a graph shows a function only if every vertical line crosses it at most once. Two crossings = not a function.
Function rule from words: translate the situation into f(x) = …. “$2 plus $1.50 per mile” → f(m) = 2 + 1.50m.
Linear function: f(x) = mx + b. Its graph is a straight line; m is the rate of change, b is the starting value.
Solving f(x) = value: work backwards — set the formula equal to the given output and solve for x.
Domain (light touch): the allowed inputs. The GED rarely tests this directly; just know inputs go into the parentheses.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

The Vending Machine Rule — What Makes a Function a Function

Picture a vending machine: you press B2 and a bottle of water drops out — today, tomorrow, always the same. That machine is a function: each input gives exactly one output. A broken machine that gives water one day and chips the next is not a function — one input, multiple outputs, no predictability.

In a table, check the x-column: if any x-value repeats with a different y-value, it is not a function.

  • Function: (1, 4), (2, 7), (3, 10) — every x appears once. ✅
  • Not a function: (2, 5), (2, 9), (3, 7) — input 2 gives two outputs. ❌

Note: different inputs may share one output — (1, 5), (2, 5) is still a function. The rule restricts inputs only.

Reading Function Notation f(x) Without Fear

f(x) is read “f of x” — a fancy name for the output y. If f(x) = 2x + 5, then f(3) means “the output when the input is 3”:

  1. Substitute: f(3) = 2(3) + 5
  2. Calculate: 6 + 5 = 11.

For negative inputs, always wrap the number in parentheses: f(−2) = 2(−2) + 5 = −4 + 5 = 1. One second of parentheses saves one point.

Functions from Tables and Graphs

Tables: “Find f(4)” means go to the x = 4 row and read the output. Reverse questions (“for which x is f(x) = 10?”) mean scanning the output column for 10 and reading the matching input. Always confirm which column is asked — the GED plants the other column’s answer among the choices.

Graphs: use the Vertical Line Test — slide an imaginary vertical line across the graph. If it ever touches two points at once, the graph is not a function (a circle fails; a line or parabola passes). To read a value, go up from the given x to the curve, then across to the y-axis.

GED Strategy — Real-World Function Problems

The GED dresses functions as taxi fares and phone bills. Winning routine:

  1. Write the rule first. “$2.50 plus $1.75 per mile” → f(m) = 2.50 + 1.75m.
  2. Then evaluate or solve. f(8) = 2.50 + 14.00 = $16.50. Given the output instead ($20)? Solve 2.50 + 1.75m = 20 → m = 10 miles.

Writing the rule before touching the calculator prevents multiplying the wrong numbers — 15 seconds well spent.

Comparison: GED Functions vs Myanmar Matriculation Functions

Many students expect the abstract function theory from Myanmar high school. The GED tests something quite different:

Feature GED Mathematical Reasoning Myanmar Matriculation Math
Main focus Evaluate f(x), read tables and graphs, interpret real-world rules Formal definitions, domain/range, composite and inverse functions
Graphs Vertical line test; read input/output values Precise hand sketching; intercepts and turning points
Question style Multiple choice, real-life contexts (fares, plans, fees) Show-your-work proofs and derivations
Calculator TI-30XS allowed — arithmetic is never the obstacle Often not allowed; mental computation emphasized
Prioritize Substitution with parentheses, table reading, vertical line test Algebraic manipulation and formal reasoning

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Four problems from easy to exam-hard. Cover the solution, then check the step-by-step analysis.

Example 1: Basic Evaluation
If f(x) = 3x − 7, what is the value of f(5)?

A. 8
B. 15
C. 22
D. −22

Solution: A. 8

Step-by-step: f(5) = 3(5) − 7 = 15 − 7 = 8. Choice C (22) traps students who add instead of subtract; D comes from sign errors.
Example 2: Negative Input with a Square
If g(x) = x² − 4, what is g(−3)?

A. −13
B. 5
C. 13
D. −5

Solution: B. 5

Step-by-step: g(−3) = (−3)² − 4 = 9 − 4 = 5. Remember (−3)² = (−3)×(−3) = 9 (positive!). Choice A (−13) is the trap for computing −3² as −9.
Example 3: Finding the Rule from a Table
The table shows: x → 1, 2, 3, 4 and f(x) → 4, 7, 10, 13. Which rule defines f?

A. f(x) = x + 3
B. f(x) = 3x + 1
C. f(x) = 4x
D. f(x) = 2x + 2

Solution: B. f(x) = 3x + 1

Step-by-step: Outputs rise by 3 per x — the rule multiplies by 3. Test B: f(1) = 4 ✓, f(4) = 13 ✓. Testing x = 1 and x = 2 in each choice takes 30 seconds and is bulletproof.
Example 4: Real-World Two-Step
A taxi charges a $2.50 pickup fee plus $1.75 per mile. Let f(m) be the fare for m miles.
(a) What is f(8)? (b) A passenger pays $20.00. How many miles?

A. (a) $16.50, (b) 10 miles
B. (a) $14.00, (b) 11 miles
C. (a) $16.50, (b) 11.4 miles
D. (a) $14.00, (b) 10 miles

Solution: A. (a) $16.50, (b) 10 miles

Step-by-step: Rule: f(m) = 2.50 + 1.75m. (a) f(8) = 2.50 + 14.00 = $16.50 (B/D forget the fee). (b) 2.50 + 1.75m = 20 → m = 10. Trap C (11.4) divides 20 by 1.75 directly — always subtract the fee first.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Reading f(x) as “f times x”
❌ Wrong: f(3) means f × 3 ✅ Correct: f(3) means “the output of f when the input is 3” — if f(x) = 2x + 5, then f(3) = 11 Why it happens: Myanmar math teaches that juxtaposition means multiplication (2x = 2 times x). Say “f of x” out loud — the word “of” blocks the multiplication reflex.
2. Computing (−3)² as −9
❌ Wrong: g(−3) = −3² − 4 = −13 ✅ Correct: g(−3) = (−3)² − 4 = 9 − 4 = 5 Why it happens: Rushing plus weak negative-number habits. Note −3² really does equal −9 — which is exactly why substituted negatives must be wrapped in parentheses.
3. Assuming every graph is a function
❌ Wrong: a circle graph must be a function ✅ Correct: a vertical line cuts a circle twice — not a function Why it happens: Memorizing “graph = function” without the vertical line test. Hold your pencil upright and slide it across every graph before answering.
4. Mixing up the input and output columns
❌ Wrong: “find x for which f(x) = 10” → answering x = 10 ✅ Correct: scan the output column for 10, read the matching input row Why it happens: Reading too fast. The GED deliberately plants the other column’s answer among the choices — always confirm which column is asked.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Parenthesize every substitution: f(−2) → 2(−2) + 5. This one habit eliminates nearly all sign errors.
Scan the x-column first: On “which is a function?” tables, a repeated input lets you eliminate in about 10 seconds.
Use your pencil as the vertical line: Hold it upright and slide it across any graph on test day.
Write the rule before calculating: For word problems, write f(m) = … first, then reach for the calculator.
Sanity-check in context: Does $16.50 for 8 miles sound plausible? Five seconds catches order-of-magnitude slips.

(Pro-Tips)

Interactive Quiz: Test Your Knowledge

1. If f(x) = 4x + 3, what is the value of f(6)?
Substitute 6 for every x: f(6) = 4(6) + 3. Multiply before adding. x
2. Which table represents a function? Table R: x → 4, 4, 5 and y → 1, 2, 3. Table S: x → 1, 2, 3 and y → 4, 4, 5.
Check the x-column for repeats — the input 4 appears twice in Table R with different outputs. x-ကော်လံမှာ ထပ်နေတာကို စစ်ပါ — ဇယား R မှာ input 4 နှစ်ခါပေါ်ပြီး output မတူပါဘူး။
3. If h(x) = x² − 9, what is h(−4)?
(−4)² = 16, not −16. The parentheses change everything! (−4)² = 16
4. Which graph represents a function? A) A circle, B) A parabola opening upward, C) A vertical line x = 3, D) A sideways-opening parabola.
Apply the Vertical Line Test: a vertical line must cross the graph at most once. The circle and the sideways parabola both fail.
5. The table shows: x → 0, 1, 2, 3 and f(x) → 5, 8, 11, 14. What is the value of f(2)?
Find the row where x = 2, then read across to the output column. x = 2 ဖြစ်တဲ့ အတန်းကို ရှာပြီး output ကော်လံဘက်ကို ဖတ်ပါ။
6. Read the following GED-style word problem and answer the question below.
A mobile phone plan charges a $15 monthly fee plus $0.10 for each text message sent. Let f(t) be the total cost for t text messages.

(a) What is the cost for 200 text messages?
(b) A customer’s bill is $45. How many text messages did the customer send?

Question: Which pair of answers is correct? Question: Which pair of answers is correct?
Write the rule first: f(t) = 15 + 0.10t. For part (b), subtract the $15 fee before dividing by 0.10.
