Mastering GED Math: Data Interpretation — Charts and Graphs

Data questions are the GED’s gift: no formulas to memorize, no heavy algebra — just careful reading of graphs and tables. These same skills answer roughly 90% of GED Science and Social Studies questions.

Key Concepts

Bar graph: compares categories with bar heights. Read the value where each bar ends — and check the scale first (each line may be worth 5 or 10, not 1).
Line graph: shows change over time. Rising = increasing, falling = decreasing, flat = no change. Steepness shows speed.
Circle (pie) graph: shows parts of a whole as percents that total 100%. To find a dollar amount: (percent ÷ 100) × total.
Table: rows and columns of exact values. Always confirm which row and which column the question asks about.
Mean (average): add all values, divide by how many there are. The GED’s favorite single-number summary.
Median: the middle value when data is ordered. Resists outliers — the “typical” value.
Mode: the most frequent value. Range = maximum − minimum.
Misleading graph: a truncated y-axis (not starting at 0) exaggerates small differences. Always check where the axis starts.
Two-step questions: read two values, then combine (subtract, add, or find a percent of the total). Write both steps before calculating.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

Step Zero — Read the Labels and the Scale First

Before looking at any bar, read three things: the title, the axis labels (dollars? thousands of dollars? percent?), and the scale (what is each gridline worth?). This 10-second habit defeats the most common GED data trap.

If the y-axis is marked 0, 5, 10, 15, each line is 5 — a bar at the third line means 15, not 3. If the axis starts at 50 instead of 0, the picture exaggerates small differences (60 vs 70 looks dramatic). The GED wants you to notice.

Bar Graphs — Compare and Subtract

Two question types: “which is biggest?” (tallest bar) and “how much more?” (read both, subtract). Example — monthly sales in hundreds: Jan 20, Feb 35, Mar 30, Apr 45. Highest: April. April vs January: 45 − 20 = 25 (hundred) = $2,500.

Cautions: check for “in hundreds/thousands” multipliers (a bar at 45 = $4,500), and subtract bigger − smaller — a negative result means you reversed them.

Line Graphs — Follow the Trend

Line graphs show change over time: Is it rising or falling? Between which points did it rise fastest? (Steepest segment.) Read values by going up from the time label to the point, then across to the axis.

Example — temperatures 9am 68°F, 11am 74°F, 1pm 82°F, 3pm 79°F. Greatest increase: 11am–1pm (+8°, steeper than +6°). Note the decrease 1pm–3pm — “temperature rose all afternoon” is a classic trap. Always check the last segment.

Circle Graphs — Percent Means “Out of 100”

Master formula: amount = (percent ÷ 100) × total. Budget $2,400, rent 35%: 0.35 × 2400 = $840.

Two-step versions: “how much more on rent (35%) than food (20%)?” → 15% difference → 0.15 × 2400 = $360. Students who stop at $840 pick the bait answer the GED always includes. Finish both steps — and verify the slices add to 100%.

GED Strategy — Surviving Two-Step Questions

  1. Point at the data. Put your finger on each number you read — kills “I thought it said 45” errors.
  2. Write both steps first. “April − January, then × 100.” Planning prevents stopping early.
  3. Estimate. 45 vs 20 (hundreds) → ≈ $2,500. If the calculator shows $250, a zero dropped.
  4. Underline NOT. “Which statement is NOT supported?” hunts the false claim — one missed word flips everything.

Comparison: GED Data Questions vs School Graph Questions

Myanmar math treats statistics as formulas to compute. The GED treats data as a story to read — computation is a small part:

Feature GED Mathematical Reasoning Myanmar School Statistics
Main skill Read, compare, and draw conclusions from graphs and tables Compute mean/median/mode from given data sets
Graph types Bar, line, circle, double-bar, tables — pick the right one to read Mostly simple bar graphs
Percent questions From circle graphs: subtract percents, then multiply by the total Percent as an isolated calculation
Tricks Truncated axes, misleading scales — the graph lies on purpose Graphs drawn honestly and to scale
Crossover value The same skills power ~90% of GED Science and Social Studies Statistics confined to math class

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Four problems covering the main graph types. Each hides at least one classic trap.

Example 1: Bar Graph — Scale Trap
A bar graph shows a shop’s sales (in hundreds of dollars). The y-axis is marked 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. Bars: Jan → 20, Feb → 35, Mar → 30, Apr → 45.
In which month were sales highest, and how much higher than in January?

A. April, $2,500 higher
B. April, $25 higher
C. February, $1,500 higher
D. April, $4,500 higher

Solution: A. April, $2,500 higher

Step-by-step: Tallest bar = April (45). Difference: 45 − 20 = 25; units are hundreds → 25 × 100 = $2,500. B forgets the multiplier; D reports April’s total instead of the difference — the unfinished two-step trap.
Example 2: Line Graph — Steepest Increase
A line graph shows temperature: 9am → 68°F, 11am → 74°F, 1pm → 82°F, 3pm → 79°F.
Between which two times did the temperature increase the most?

A. 9am–11am
B. 11am–1pm
C. 1pm–3pm
D. 9am–3pm

Solution: B. 11am–1pm

Step-by-step: Changes: +6, +8, −3 (a decrease!). Largest increase = +8, between 11am and 1pm. Choice C traps students who pick the last segment without checking its direction.
Example 3: Circle Graph — Percent to Dollars
A family’s $2,400 monthly budget: Rent 35%, Food 20%, Transport 15%, Savings 10%, Other 20%.
How much more is spent on rent than on food?

A. $840
B. $480
C. $360
D. $1,320

Solution: C. $360

Step-by-step: Percent difference: 35% − 20% = 15%; dollars: 0.15 × 2400 = $360. Choice A ($840) is the rent alone — the classic unfinished two-step trap, always among the choices. Subtracting percents first needs only one multiplication.
Example 4: Misleading Scale
A bar graph compares two phone plans’ monthly costs. The y-axis starts at $50 (not $0), marked 50, 60, 70, 80. Plan A bar reaches 60; Plan B bar reaches 75. Plan B’s bar looks three times as tall.
Which statement is supported by the data?

A. Plan B costs three times as much as Plan A.
B. Plan B costs $15 more per month than Plan A.
C. Plan B costs $25 more per month than Plan A.
D. Plan A costs more than Plan B.

Solution: B. Plan B costs $15 more per month than Plan A.

Step-by-step: Ignore the visual exaggeration: A = $60, B = $75; difference = $15. Choice A trusts the picture instead of the numbers — the whole point of the truncated-axis trap. When bars look shockingly different, check where the axis starts.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Misreading the scale
❌ Wrong: bar at the 3rd gridline (scale = 5 per line) → reading 3 ✅ Correct: 3rd line × 5 = 15 Why it happens: Myanmar school graphs almost always use 1-per-line scales, so eyes default to counting lines. On the GED the scale is a deliberate variable — 10 seconds confirming “what is each line worth?” is the highest-value 10 seconds on the test.
2. Confusing percent with absolute amount
❌ Wrong: “rent 35%, food 20%” → “rent costs $15 more” ✅ Correct: 35% − 20% = 15%, then 0.15 × $2,400 = $360 Why it happens: Students treat the percent sign as decoration. Drill the reflex: a percent is “out of 100” — it becomes money only after multiplying by the total.
3. Stopping after step one of a two-step question
❌ Wrong: “how much more is rent than food?” → answering $840 (rent alone) ✅ Correct: finish both steps — $360, as in Example 3 Why it happens: The brain celebrates finding a number and stops — and the GED always includes the half-finished answer among the choices. Write both steps before touching the calculator.
4. Trusting the picture instead of the numbers
❌ Wrong: Plan B’s bar looks 3× taller → “three times as much” ✅ Correct: read the axis — $75 vs $60, a $15 difference; the axis starts at $50 Why it happens: Visual intuition overrides numerical reading — exactly what truncated axes exploit. When bars look shockingly different, check where the y-axis starts.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Point at every number: Physically point at each value you read from a graph. Kills “I thought it said 45” errors.
Subtract percents first: 35% − 20% = 15%, then one multiplication — faster and safer than two dollar amounts.
Underline NOT: “Which statement is NOT supported?” hunts the false claim — one missed word flips everything.
Count data points before averaging: Five scores means divide by 5. Say the count out loud first.
Reuse this skill everywhere: GED Science and Social Studies are ~90% graph-and-passage reading — one hour here pays off in three subjects.

1. A bar graph shows shop sales (in hundreds of dollars): Jan → 20, Feb → 35, Mar → 30. In which month were sales highest?
Find the tallest bar — Feb reaches 35, higher than Jan (20) and Mar (30).
2. Using the same graph (sales in hundreds of dollars): how much more did the shop sell in February than in January?
35 − 20 = 15, and the units are “hundreds of dollars” — so 15 × 100 = $1,500. 35 − 20 = 15၊ ပြီးတော့ ယူနစ်က “ရာချီဒေါ်လာ” — ဒါကြောင့် 15 × 100 = $1,500။
3. A line graph shows temperature: 9am → 68°F, 11am → 74°F, 1pm → 82°F, 3pm → 79°F. Which statement is supported by the data?
Compute each segment’s change: +6, +8, −3. Note the last segment actually fell!
