Mastering GED RLA: Making Inferences

Hello everyone! Today, we are going to explore one of the most critical skills for the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) exam, as well as for other international proficiency tests like IELTS and TOEFL: Making Inferences.

Making an inference means drawing a logical conclusion based on clues provided by the author, rather than relying on explicitly stated facts. In English literature, this is often called “reading between the lines.” For many students from Myanmar, this can be challenging because Myanmar culture often favors direct and explicit communication. Therefore, we will break down exactly how to infer accurately and avoid common traps on the exam.

Key Concepts & Definitions

To fully understand inferencing, you must first master these 8 essential terms:

Inference (noun) / Infer (verb): A logical conclusion drawn by combining evidence explicitly found in the text with your own background knowledge.
Textual Evidence: Specific words or sentences from the text that you can point to in order to prove that your inference is correct.
Prior Knowledge / Background Knowledge: The general information and life experience you already possess before reading the text.
Explicit Information: Facts that are clearly and directly stated by the author in the text. No guessing is required.
Implicit Information: Ideas that are suggested or hinted at by the author, requiring the reader to figure them out.
Assumption: A guess or belief made without sufficient evidence from the text. (Do not confuse this with an inference; assumptions lead to wrong answers on the GED).
Draw a Conclusion: To synthesize all provided facts and evidence to reach a final decision or judgment.
Read Between the Lines: To look for or discover a meaning that is hidden or implied rather than explicitly stated.

Detailed Explanation

Textual Evidence + Prior Knowledge = Inference

1. The Logic of Inferencing

Imagine this scenario: A man walks into a room. His umbrella is dripping wet, and there are water droplets on his coat. He says, “It’s really bad out there.”

Notice that the word “rain” is never used (Not Explicit). Yet, we know it is raining. How?

  • Textual Evidence: Wet umbrella, wet coat, “It’s bad out there.”
  • Prior Knowledge: Objects get wet when exposed to rain.
  • Inference: It is raining heavily outside.

2. Why is it difficult for some students?

Many students are trained to answer reading comprehension questions by simply finding a keyword in the question and matching it to the exact same word in the text (Word-matching strategy). This strategy will fail on inference questions. You cannot directly find the answer in the text; you must build the answer yourself using the provided clues.

3. How to make accurate Inferences on the GED

  • Step 1: Identify the question type. Look for words like “suggests,” “implies,” “infers,” or “most likely.”
  • Step 2: Find the explicit facts in the relevant section of the passage.
  • Step 3: Ask yourself, “What is the author trying to tell me indirectly using these facts?”
  • Step 4: Test the multiple-choice options. Ask, “Where is the evidence for this choice?” If there is no evidence in the text, the choice is wrong.

Comparison Table: Inference vs. Assumption

The most common mistake is confusing a logical inference with a baseless assumption.

Feature Inference Assumption
Definition A logical conclusion based on evidence. A preconceived belief without solid evidence.
Foundation Rooted in Textual Evidence. Rooted in Personal Emotion or Bias.
On the GED Exam The Correct Answer. A dangerous Trap/Distractor.
Example (A person is crying) They are experiencing something upsetting. (Correct Inference) They must have failed a test. (Baseless Assumption)

Extensive Example Bank

Let’s analyze several GED-level examples. Focus on what can be logically inferred from each sentence.

Category 1: Inferring Character Feelings & Traits

“Sarah bit her lip, tapping her pen rapidly on the desk while keeping her eyes glued to the clock.”
Inference: Sarah is nervous, anxious, or impatient.
Analysis: We use our prior knowledge that biting lips and tapping pens are physical symptoms of anxiety or impatience.
“As soon as the manager walked in, the lively chatter in the breakroom abruptly stopped, and everyone suddenly found their shoes incredibly interesting.”
Inference: The employees are intimidated by or dislike the manager.
Analysis: Avoiding eye contact (looking at shoes) and sudden silence are strong clues indicating fear or discomfort.

Category 2: Inferring Setting and Context

“The air tasted of salt, and the rhythmic crashing sound lulled her to sleep.”
Inference: She is at the beach or near the ocean.
Analysis: Sensory details like “salty air” and “crashing sound” strongly point to an ocean setting.

Category 3: Inferring Cause and Effect

“Sales of electric vehicles have skyrocketed, while traditional gas stations are increasingly adding charging ports to their lots.”
Inference: Gas stations are adapting to the shift in consumer demand to stay in business.
Analysis: Logically, if EV sales go up, gas sales might go down. Gas stations adding charging ports is an adaptation to this market shift.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Over-inferencing (Making Assumptions)
Text: John arrived at work 15 minutes late.
❌ Wrong: John doesn’t care about his job, or he was stuck in traffic. (No evidence for this). ✅ Right: John was not on time for his shift. Psychology: Students often invent a story to explain the fact, moving beyond what the text actually supports.
2. Confusing Explicit Information with Inference
Text: Mary wakes up at 5 AM every day to run.
❌ Wrong: Mary wakes up early. (This is explicitly stated; it is NOT an inference). ✅ Right: Mary is highly disciplined and values her fitness. Psychology: Due to word-matching habits, students often pick the answer that looks exactly like a sentence in the text, failing to realize the question asked what the text *implies*.
3. The “Absolute Words” Trap
Text: Some dogs bark when they see strangers.
❌ Wrong: *All* dogs bark at strangers. (Absolute). ✅ Right: A dog barking might indicate a stranger is nearby. Psychology: Answers containing words like “always,” “never,” “all,” or “none” are almost always incorrect on inference questions unless the text provides absolute proof.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

The “Must Be True” Test: Before selecting an inference answer, ask yourself, “Based ONLY on the text, MUST this be true?” If it merely “could be true,” it is likely a trap.
The Finger Point Test: You must be able to physically point your finger at the specific words in the text that support your chosen inference. If you can’t find the evidence, the answer is wrong.
Differentiate “Suggested” vs “Stated”: If a question asks “What is stated,” find the explicit fact. If it asks “What is suggested/implied,” look for the logical conclusion. An explicitly stated fact is the WRONG answer for an “implies” question.

အသေးစိတ် ရှင်းလင်းချက်များ

Textual Evidence (စာထဲက အထောက်အထား) + Prior Knowledge (မိမိရဲ့ ဗဟုသုတ) = Inference (ကောက်ချက်ချခြင်း)

၁။ The Logic of Inferencing (ကောက်ချက်ချခြင်း၏ ယုတ္တိဗေဒ)

  • Textual Evidence: ထီးရေစိုနေတယ်၊ အင်္ကျီရေစိုနေတယ်၊ “အပြင်မှာ ဆိုးတယ်” လို့ ပြောတယ်။
  • Prior Knowledge: မိုးရွာရင် အရာဝတ္ထုတွေ ရေစိုတတ်တယ်။
  • Inference: အပြင်မှာ မိုးသည်းထန်စွာ ရွာနေသည်။

၂။ Why is it difficult for Myanmar speakers?

How to make accurate Inferences on the GED (GED အတွက် မှန်ကန်စွာ ကောက်ချက်ချနည်း)

Category 1: Inferring Character Feelings & Traits (ဇာတ်ကောင်၏ စိတ်ခံစားမှုနှင့် စရိုက်လက္ခဏာ)

“Sarah bit her lip, tapping her pen rapidly on the desk while keeping her eyes glued to the clock.”
(ဆာရာသည် သူမ၏ နှုတ်ခမ်းကို ကိုက်ထားပြီး၊ မျက်လုံးများကို နာရီဆီမှ မခွာဘဲ စားပွဲပေါ်တွင် ဘောပင်ကို ခပ်မြန်မြန် ခေါက်နေသည်။)
Inference: Sarah is nervous, anxious, or impatient.
“As soon as the manager walked in, the lively chatter in the breakroom abruptly stopped, and everyone suddenly found their shoes incredibly interesting.”
(မန်နေဂျာ ဝင်လာသည်နှင့် တပြိုင်နက်၊ နားနေခန်းထဲရှိ တက်ကြွနေသော စကားသံများ ရုတ်တရက် ရပ်တန့်သွားပြီး လူတိုင်းသည် မိမိတို့၏ ဖိနပ်များကိုသာ အလွန်စိတ်ဝင်စားစွာ ငုံ့ကြည့်နေကြသည်။)
Inference: The employees are intimidated by or dislike the manager.

Category 2: Inferring Setting and Context (နေရာဒေသ၊ အချိန်နှင့် အခြေအနေ)

“The air tasted of salt, and the rhythmic crashing sound lulled her to sleep.”
(လေထဲတွင် ဆားငန်ရသာ ရှိနေပြီး၊ စည်းချက်ကျကျ ရိုက်ခတ်နေသော အသံများက သူမကို အိပ်မောကျစေသည်။)
Inference: She is at the beach or near the ocean. (သူမသည် ကမ်းခြေ သို့မဟုတ် ပင်လယ်နားတွင် ရှိနေသည်။)
ရှင်းလင်းချက်: ဆားငန်ရသာရှိတဲ့ လေ (Salty air) နဲ့ ရိုက်ခတ်သံ (Crashing sound of waves) ဆိုတဲ့ အာရုံခံစားမှု (Sensory details) တွေက ပင်လယ်ကို ညွှန်းဆိုနေပါတယ်။

Category 3: Inferring Cause and Effect (အကြောင်းနှင့် အကျိုး)

“Sales of electric vehicles have skyrocketed, while traditional gas stations are increasingly adding charging ports to their lots.”
(လျှပ်စစ်ကား ရောင်းအားများ အလွန်မြင့်တက်လာနေချိန်တွင် ရိုးရိုး ဓာတ်ဆီဆိုင်များသည် ၎င်းတို့၏ ခြံဝင်းအတွင်း လျှပ်စစ်အားသွင်းစက်များကို ပိုမို တပ်ဆင်လာကြသည်။)
Inference: Gas stations are adapting to the shift in consumer demand to stay in business.

Category 4: Complex Informational/Literary Inferences (အဆင့်မြင့် စာပိုဒ်များအတွက်)

“When asked about the missing funds, the treasurer cleared his throat, avoided eye contact, and stated, ‘Mistakes in accounting are not entirely uncommon.'”
Inference: The treasurer is likely hiding something or is involved in the missing funds.

(L1 Interference)

(Pro-Tips)

The “Must Be True” Test: Inference အဖြေတစ်ခုကို ရွေးတော့မယ်ဆိုရင် “ပေးထားတဲ့ စာအရ ဒီအချက်ဟာ မဖြစ်မနေ မှန်ကိုမှန်ရမှာလား (Must it be true?)” လို့ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ပြန်မေးပါ။ တကယ်လို့ “မှန်ကောင်း မှန်နိုင်တယ် (Could be true)” လောက်ပဲဆိုရင် အဲ့ဒီအဖြေကို မရွေးပါနဲ့။ Inference ဟာ ခိုင်လုံရပါမယ်။
The Finger Point Test:
Differentiate “Suggested” vs “Stated”: မေးခွန်းမှာ “What is stated…” လို့ မေးရင် Explicit Information ကို မေးတာမို့ စာထဲကအတိုင်း အတိအကျ ပြန်ရှာပါ။ “What is suggested/implied…” လို့ မေးရင်တော့ Inference ကို မေးတာမို့ စာထဲကအတိုင်း အတိအကျ ပြန်ရေးထားတဲ့ အဖြေဟာ “ထောင်ချောက် (Trap Answer)” ဆိုတာ သတိပြုပါ။
Tone as a Clue: စာရေးသူရဲ့ လေသံ (Tone) ဟာ Inference လုပ်ဖို့ အကောင်းဆုံး အထောက်အထား ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ Negative tone သုံးထားရင်၊ မှန်ကန်တဲ့ Inference အဖြေဟာလည်း Negative အဓိပ္ပာယ် သက်ရောက်ရပါမယ်။

1. If a text says, “Marcus packed his sunscreen, sunglasses, and a large towel into a tote bag,” what is the most logical inference? 1. If a text says, “Marcus packed his sunscreen, sunglasses, and a large towel into a tote bag,” what is the most logical inference?
(မေးခွန်း: စာပိုဒ်တစ်ခုက “မာကပ်စ်သည် နေလောင်ခံခရင်မ်၊ နေကာမျက်မှန်နှင့် တဘက်ကြီးတစ်ခုကို အိတ်ထဲသို့ ထည့်လိုက်သည်” ဟုဆိုပါက အယုတ္တိအရှိဆုံး ကောက်ချက်မှာ အဘယ်နည်း။)
Use your prior knowledge about what those items are used for. Note: Option C is just restating explicitly what is in the text, so it is NOT an inference. အဲ့ဒီပစ္စည်းတွေ ဘယ်နေရာမှာ သုံးလဲဆိုတဲ့ ဗဟုသုတကို သုံးပါ။ Option C ဟာ စာထဲကအတိုင်း ပြန်ရေးထားတာမို့ (Explicit) လုံးဝ မှားပါတယ်။ Inference မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

The Board of Directors called an emergency meeting at 7:00 AM on Monday. When the CEO, Mr. Vance, emerged from the boardroom two hours later, he refused to look at the assembled staff or answer any questions from the press gathered outside. Instead, he briskly walked to his car, carrying a cardboard box filled with personal photographs and a small potted plant that had sat on his desk for the last ten years. Shortly after, the company’s stock price dropped by 15%.

Look at the clues: emergency meeting, avoiding people, packing personal items in a box, stock dropping. Option B is explicitly stated (not an inference). Option D uses the absolute word “never.”
