Mastering GED Math: Surface Area and Volume

The GED only tests a handful of solids — boxes, cylinders, cones, pyramids, spheres — and the formula sheet provides eformula. The real test is reading carefully: how much fits inside (volume) or how much covers the outside (surface area)?

Key Concepts

Volume (V): how much fits inside a 3D solid. Units: cubic units (cm³, in³, ft³). Think “holds, fills, capacity”.
Surface area (SA): the total area of all outside faces. Units: square units (cm², in², ft²). Think “paint, wrap, material”.
Rectangular prism (box): V = l × w × h; SA = 2(lw + lh + wh) — three pairs of identical faces.
Cube: V = s³; SA = 6s² (six identical square faces).
Cylinder: V = πr²h (base circle area × height); SA = 2πr² + 2πrh (two lids + curved side).
Cone: V = ⅓πr²h — exactly one-third of the cylinder with the same base and height.
Pyramid: V = ⅓ × (base area) × h — one-third of the matching prism.
Sphere: V = ⁴⁄₃πr³; SA = 4πr². The radius is cubed for volume, squared for surface area.
Open-top rule: “no lid” / “open-top” deletes one face — subtract it from the surface area.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

Volume — One Idea for All Prisms and Cylinders

Nearly every GED volume formula is one idea: Volume = (area of the base) × height. A prism has two identical parallel bases — a box, a cylinder, a triangular prism. The recipe:

  1. Find the base area (box: l × w; cylinder: πr²).
  2. Multiply by the height between the bases.

Box 5 × 3 × 2 ft: 15 ft² × 2 = 30 ft³. Cylinder r = 3 in, h = 10 in: base 9π × 10 = 90π ≈ 282.6 in³. Same two steps, every time. Special cases: cube V = s³; pointed solids (cones, pyramids) hold exactly one-third of the straight version (cone V = ⅓πr²h); sphere V = ⁴⁄₃πr³. All on the formula sheet — you just name the solid.

Surface Area — Count Every Face

Surface area is addition: find each face, add them all. Don’t miss any:

  • Opposite pairs (boxes): front/back, left/right, top/bottom. SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh. Box 5 × 3 × 2: 2(15) + 2(10) + 2(6) = 62 ft².
  • Nets: imagine the solid unfolded. A cylinder’s net is two circles plus one rectangle (the curved side unrolls to width 2πr, height h), so SA = 2πr² + 2πrh. A given net is practically a gift — just add the labeled pieces.

Run the face checklist before finalizing: top? bottom? front? back? left? right? The bottom of a box and the second base of a cylinder are the most-forgotten faces.

Cylinders and Spheres — Round Solids

  • Cylinder: V = πr²h; SA = 2πr² + 2πrh (two lids + unrolled side).
  • Sphere: V = ⁴⁄₃πr³; SA = 4πr².

Note the radius is cubed in sphere volume — doubling a ball’s radius multiplies volume by 8 (2³). The GED tests this scaling idea, and it surprises everyone unprepared.

GED Strategy — Which Formula, Which Numbers

Four steps for every 3D question:

  1. Name the solid (box? cylinder? sphere? — the words “can”, “ball”, “tank” tell you).
  2. Volume or surface area? “Hold/capacity” → volume (units³). “Material/paint/wrap” → surface area (units²).
  3. Pull the formula, label each number (halve a given diameter immediately).
  4. Estimate first. Cylinder r = 3, h = 10 ≈ 3 × 9 × 10 = 270. If the calculator says 2,826, a decimal slipped.

Comparison: GED 3D Problems vs Myanmar Textbook 3D Problems

Myanmar geometry drills mensuration with neat whole numbers. The GED asks about real objects with decimals and “how much paint?” contexts:

Feature GED Mathematical Reasoning Myanmar Matriculation Math
Main task Decide volume vs surface area from the real-life context Apply a given formula to a described solid
Tricky wording “Open-top tank”, “no lid” — one face disappears Complete solids only, rarely mentioned
Numbers Decimals, π ≈ 3.14, mixed units — calculator required Neat integers, π = 22/7, single unit
Units ft³ vs ft² vs ft is the question — choices use all three Often omitted entirely
Conceptual Scaling: double the radius → ×8 volume, ×4 surface area Scaling questions rare

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Four problems from boxes to spheres. Example 3’s open-top twist is a classic GED trap.

Example 1: Box — Volume and Surface Area
A shipping box is 5 ft long, 3 ft wide, and 2 ft tall.
(a) What is its volume? (b) How much cardboard is needed to make it?

A. (a) 30 ft³, (b) 62 ft²
B. (a) 10 ft³, (b) 31 ft²
C. (a) 30 ft², (b) 62 ft³
D. (a) 62 ft³, (b) 30 ft²

Solution: A. (a) 30 ft³, (b) 62 ft²

Step-by-step: V = lwh = 30 ft³. SA (three face-pairs): 2(15) + 2(10) + 2(6) = 62 ft². Choice B forgets to double the pairs; C and D swap the units — volume is always cubic.
Example 2: Cylinder Volume — The Paint Can
A cylindrical paint can has a radius of 3 inches and a height of 10 inches. What is its volume? (Use π ≈ 3.14.)

A. 282.6 in³
B. 94.2 in³
C. 188.4 in³
D. 942 in³

Solution: A. 282.6 in³

Step-by-step: V = πr²h = 3.14 × 9 × 10 = 282.6 in³. Choice B forgets to square the radius. Estimate check (π≈3 → 270) confirms A instantly.
Example 3: Open-Top Box — The Missing Lid Trap
An open-top storage box (no lid) is 6 m long, 4 m wide, and 3 m tall. How much material is needed to build it?

A. 84 m²
B. 108 m²
C. 60 m²
D. 72 m²

Solution: A. 84 m²

Step-by-step: “Open-top” means FIVE faces: bottom 24 + front/back 36 + left/right 24 = 84 m². Choice B (108) is the closed-box area — the trap for fast readers. Circle “open-top” whenever it appears.
Example 4: Sphere Volume
A spherical water tank has a radius of 6 cm. What is its volume? (Use π ≈ 3.14.)

A. 904.32 cm³
B. 452.16 cm³
C. 150.72 cm³
D. 301.44 cm³

Solution: A. 904.32 cm³

Step-by-step: V = ⁴⁄₃πr³ = ⁴⁄₃ × 3.14 × 216 = 288 × 3.14 = 904.32 cm³. Note B (452.16) is exactly the surface area 4πr² — the GED loves it as a distractor. Check units: cm³ means volume. ✓

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Forgetting faces in surface area
❌ Wrong: box 5 × 3 × 2 → SA = (5×3) + (5×2) + (3×2) = 31 (only 3 faces!) ✅ Correct: 3 pairs → 2(15) + 2(10) + 2(6) = 62 Why it happens: Students compute the three visible faces and stop. Run the face checklist — top? bottom? front? back? left? right? — and remember opposites come in identical pairs.
2. Using the diameter as the radius (round solids)
❌ Wrong: cylinder diameter 6, height 10 → V = π(6)²(10) = 360π ✅ Correct: r = 3, V = π(3)²(10) = 90π Why it happens: Real objects are measured across (diameter), but formulas want the radius. Worse, the radius gets squared — using the diameter quadruples the answer. Halve it first, always.
3. Swapping volume and surface area units
❌ Wrong: “how much water fits?” → answering 62 ft² ✅ Correct: “fits/holds/capacity” → volume → 30 ft³; “material/paint/wrap” → surface area → 62 ft² Why it happens: Both answers come from the same numbers, so students grab whichever they finished last. If the question says “hold”, the final unit must be cubic.
4. Ignoring unit conversions
❌ Wrong: box 2 m × 50 cm × 40 cm → V = 2 × 50 × 40 = 4000 (mixed units!) ✅ Correct: convert first — 200 cm × 50 cm × 40 cm = 400,000 cm³ Why it happens: Myanmar textbook problems use one unit, so the convert-first reflex never forms. On the GED, mixed units are deliberate: convert everything to ONE unit before the formula.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Estimate with π ≈ 3: r = 3, h = 10 → V ≈ 270. If the calculator shows 2,826, a decimal slipped.
Circle the lid words: “Open-top”, “no lid” — one face disappears.
Learn the ⅓ pattern: Cone = ⅓ of cylinder, pyramid = ⅓ of prism. A suspiciously large cone answer means the ⅓ was forgotten.
Sketch the net for strange solids: Unfolded faces turn surface area into addition.
Doubling radius ×8s volume: 2³ = 8 for volume, 2² = 4 for surface area — free points on scaling questions.
