Mastering GED Math: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

Hello, future GED graduates! If you could master only ONE topic on the GED Mathematical Reasoning test, this would be it. Fractions, decimals, and percentages (FDP for short) appear in almost every math question. Answer choices deliberately mix the forms — fraction, decimal, percent — to test whether you can glide between them. Discount, tax, tip, and salary word problems? All FDP questions in disguise.

Good news: the TI-30XS calculator is allowed, with special fraction and percent keys. That changes the game. Forget longhand drill-and-kill — the Myanmar classroom way. Success now means: understand what is asked, convert everything into ONE form, estimate first, and let the calculator do the heavy lifting.

Key Concepts & Definitions

Lock in the vocabulary first — half the battle is recognizing what the question describes:

Numerator / Denominator: In ¾, the top (3) is the numerator — parts you have; the bottom (4) is the denominator — equal parts in the whole. Bigger denominator = smaller pieces.
Equivalent Fractions: Same value, different look: ½ = ²/₄ = ³/₆. Multiply or divide top and bottom by the SAME number. This powers all fraction addition and subtraction.
Simplifying (Lowest Terms): Divide top and bottom by their greatest common factor: ⁶/₈ → ³/₄. GED choices are in lowest terms — always simplify.
Least Common Denominator (LCD): Smallest number every denominator divides into evenly (⅓ and ¼ → 12). No LCD, no adding or subtracting.
Mixed Number vs Improper Fraction: 2½ pairs a whole number with a fraction; ⁵/₂ has top bigger than bottom. Convert mixed → improper before multiplying or dividing: 2½ = ⁵/₂.
Terminating vs Repeating Decimal: Terminating decimals stop (0.75); repeating decimals go on forever (0.333…). The GED shows ⅓ as 0.333 — watch the rounding trap.
Percent (Per Hundred): “Percent” means per hundred: 35% = ³⁾/₁₀₀ = 0.35. To decimal: move the point two places left. To percent: two places right.
Percent of a Number: “Of” means multiply: 20% of 150 = 0.20 × 150 = 30. Discounts, tax, tips, commissions — all “percent of” in disguise.
Percent Change: (change ÷ original) × 100%. Salary 450,000 → 495,000 kyats: 45,000 ÷ 450,000 = 10% increase. Always divide by the ORIGINAL.
Percentage Points (vs Percent Change): 40% → 50% is 10 percentage points, but a 25% increase (10 ÷ 40). The GED loves this trap.

Detailed Explanation & Strategy

1. Converting Fluently: Fractions ↔ Decimals ↔ Percents

The most valuable skill in this lesson. First move on any FDP question: convert everything into ONE form — usually decimals. ¾ = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Decimal → percent: move the point two places right (0.75 = 75%). Percent → fraction: write over 100 and simplify (75% = ⁷⁵/₁₀₀ = ³/₄).

Memorize this “magic list” cold — instant recognition saves minutes:

  • ½ = 0.5 = 50%  |  Âź = 0.25 = 25%  |  ž = 0.75 = 75%
  • ⅓ ≈ 0.333 = 33.3%  |  ⅔ ≈ 0.667 = 66.7%
  • ⅕ = 0.2 = 20%  |  ⅖ = 0.4 = 40%  |  ⅗ = 0.6 = 60%  |  ⅘ = 0.8 = 80%
  • ⅛ = 0.125 = 12.5%  |  ⅜ = 0.375 = 37.5%  |  ⅝ = 0.625 = 62.5%  |  ⅞ = 0.875 = 87.5%

See the pattern: fifths build on ⅕ = 0.2, eighths on ⅛ = 0.125. Only the thirds never terminate.

2. Fraction Operations: Three Rules

Adding/subtracting: you MUST have a common denominator. 1) Find the LCD. 2) Convert each fraction. 3) Add or subtract the numerators only. 4) Simplify. Example: ⅔ + ⅙ → LCD 6 → ⁴/₆ + ⅙ = ⁵/₆.

Multiplying: straight across, then simplify — cancel common factors first (⅔ × ⁹/₁₀ = ³/₅). Dividing: invert and multiply: ⅔ ÷ ⁴/₅ = ⅔ × ⁵/₄ = ⁵/₆. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first.

3. Percent Problems: “Of”, Change, Reverse

Three buckets. (1) “Percent of”: decimal × number (0.15 × 200 = 30). (2) Percent change: (change á original) × 100% — a $50 bill dropping to $40 is 10 á 50 = 20% decrease. Trap: dividing by the NEW number.

(3) Reverse (finding the original): hardest, hence most tested. A $80 jacket at 25% off → you pay 75%: 0.75 × 80 = $60. Backwards: paid $60 after 25% off → original = 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80. Rule: original = sale price ÷ (1 − discount rate).

4. TI-30XS Calculator Strategy

The on-screen TI-30XS is part of the test design — use it. Learn the fraction key (type ⅔ directly) and the percent key. Two rules:

  1. Convert to decimals when comparing or ordering — place value makes “which is largest?” trivial.
  2. Estimate BEFORE computing — 18% of 492 is “about 100.” Estimation catches wrong-key absurdities.

Comparison: GED FDP Strategy vs Myanmar Classroom Habits

Our schooling trained us for a different test. What must shift:

Aspect GED FDP Strategy Myanmar Classroom Habit
Calculator use Expected and provided — part of the test design. Longhand drills only; calculators often banned.
Estimation Estimate first, then compute — catches errors fast. Exact-first; answers never sanity-checked.
Question context Word problems rule: discounts, tax, tips, salaries. Bare-number exercises; word problems cause panic.
Answer forms Choices mix fractions, decimals, percents on purpose. One form per exercise set; no switching practice.
FDP equivalents Memorized fluency — instant recognition. Recomputed from scratch every time — too slow.

Extensive Example Bank (Authentic GED-Style Problems)

Five problems, increasing difficulty. Cover the choices, solve, then check:

Example 1: Ordering Mixed Forms
Which is the largest?

A. ⅗
B. 0.62
C. 65%
D. ⅝

Solution: C. 65%

Step-by-step: 1) To decimals: ⅗ = 0.6, 65% = 0.65, ⅝ = 0.625. 2) Largest of 0.6, 0.62, 0.65, 0.625 is 0.65 = 65%.
Example 2: Fraction Subtraction with LCD
What is ⅔ − ¼?

A. ⅓
B. ⁵/₁₂
C. ⁷/₁₂
D. ⁵/₇

Solution: B. ⁵/₁₂

Step-by-step: 1) LCD of 3 and 4 is 12 → ⁸/₁₂ − ³/₁₂. 2) Subtract numerators: ⁵/₁₂. Choice D is the trap for subtracting denominators too.
Example 3: “Percent of” Word Problem
A bakery makes 240 muffins; 30% are sold by noon. How many were sold?

A. 60
B. 72
C. 80
D. 90

Solution: B. 72

Step-by-step: 1) “Of” means multiply: 30% = 0.30. 2) 0.30 × 240 = 72. Check: one-third of 240 is 80, so 72 is reasonable.
Example 4: Discount + Tax (Two Steps)
A $80 jacket is 25% off, then 8% tax is added on the discounted price. Final price?

A. $60.00
B. $64.80
C. $65.60
D. $66.40

Solution: B. $64.80

Step-by-step: 1) Discount: 0.25 × 80 = $20 → sale price $60 (A is the stop-early trap). 2) Tax on $60: 0.08 × 60 = $4.80 → total $64.80.
Example 5: Percent Increase (Salary)
Salary rises from 450,000 to 495,000 kyats. Percent increase?

A. 9%
B. 10%
C. 11%
D. 45%

Solution: B. 10%

Step-by-step: 1) Change = 45,000. 2) 45,000 á 450,000 = 0.10 = 10%. Choice A traps those who divide by the NEW salary.

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)

1. Adding Numerators AND Denominators
❌ Wrong: ½ + ⅓ = ⅖ ✅ Correct: ½ + ⅓ = Âł/₆ + ²/₆ = ⁾/₆ Why it happens: Fractions get taught as “two stacked numbers.” A fraction is ONE number — add numerators only after denominators match. Check: ½ + ⅓ must exceed ½, but ⅖ is smaller.
2. “Of” Confusion: 20% OF 150 vs 20% OFF 150
❌ Wrong: “20% off 150” = 30 (that’s the discount, not the price) ✅ Correct: 20% of 150 = 30; 20% OFF 150 = 120 Why it happens: “Of” and “off” look alike; word-by-word readers blur them. OF = multiply; OFF = subtract. One word flips the answer.
3. Percentage Points vs Percent Change
❌ Wrong: 40% → 50% is “a 10% increase” ✅ Correct: 10 percentage points = a 25% increase (10 á 40) Why it happens: Everyday speech says “10% တက်တယ်” for both. The GED is precise: points = subtract; percent change = á original.
4. Decimal-Place Slips
❌ Wrong: 0.5 = 5% ✅ Correct: 0.5 = 50%; 5% = 0.05 Why it happens: Kyat habits make “0.5” feel small. Drill the reflex: decimal → percent moves the point TWO places right, always.

Pro-Tips for High Scorers (College Ready)

Memorize the magic list cold — it appears in nearly every question; instant recognition saves minutes.
Convert to ONE form before comparing — pick decimals, convert all choices, then order by place value.
Estimate before computing — 18% of 492 ≈ 100. Wrong-key absurdities get caught free.
Use the fraction key, not longhand LCD — entering ⅔ + ⅚ directly is faster and safer.
Sanity-check percent answers — a discount can’t exceed the price; an increase can’t shrink the number.
