Mastering GED RLA: Transitions & Paragraph Cohesion
Hello everyone! Today’s topic is about Transitions & Paragraph Cohesion, which is extremely important for both the Extended Response (Essay) writing and Language Conventions questions in the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) exam.
In a GED Essay, no matter how good the author’s ideas and arguments are, if the sentences and paragraphs are not smoothly connected (Flow), it is absolutely impossible to get a good score. Most Myanmar students have a habit of writing short, isolated sentences (Choppy sentences) when writing in English, which makes it difficult for the reader (Grader) to understand how the ideas are related. Therefore, we will learn in detail the step-by-step usage of Cohesion and Transition words that will unite the entire paragraph as if it were glued together.
Key Concepts & Definitions
To fully understand Transitions and Cohesion, let’s first clarify the following 8 English terms:
Detailed Explanation
We will learn two main ways to achieve Cohesion in the GED RLA exam.
1. Using Transition Words Logically
Just memorizing transitions is not enough. You must first find the Logical Relationship between the two sentences and then select the appropriate transition. There are 4 types of relationships.
- Category 1: Addition
- Purpose: Used when providing a series of evidence or reasons.
- Words: Furthermore, Moreover, In addition, Additionally, Likewise.
- Category 2: Contrast
- Purpose: Used when comparing different views, or when refuting what the other side says.
- Words: However, On the other hand, Conversely, Nevertheless, In contrast.
- Category 3: Cause and Effect
- Purpose: Used when explaining that one event caused another.
- Words: Therefore, Consequently, As a result, Thus, Accordingly.
- Category 4: Emphasis & Illustration
- Purpose: Used when giving an example to make your point clearer.
- Words: For instance, For example, Specifically, Indeed, Ultimately.
2. Achieving Cohesion without Transition Words
If you use transition words in every sentence, the reading becomes robotic. Therefore, you must use the following methods in combination.
- Pronoun Reference:
- No Cohesion: The mayor proposed a new tax. The mayor believes the tax will fund schools.
- Cohesion: The mayor proposed a new tax. He believes it will fund schools.
- Repetition of Key Nouns (Synonyms):
- The key is not to repeat the exact same word over and over, but to use synonyms or broader categories to improve cohesion.
- Example: The company released a new smartphone. This device has revolutionized communication. (Using ‘device’ instead of repeating ‘smartphone’)
Comparison Table: Weak vs. Strong Cohesion
Let’s compare a paragraph without transitions to one that uses them systematically.
| Features | Weak Cohesion ❌ | Strong Cohesion ✅ |
|---|---|---|
| Paragraph Example | Passage A uses facts. Passage B uses emotions. Facts are better. Passage A wins. | Passage A builds a stronger argument by using verifiable facts. Conversely, Passage B relies solely on emotional appeals. Therefore, Passage A is far more convincing. |
| Reader’s Feeling | Choppy, as if a robot is speaking. | Smooth flow of ideas, like a flowing river. |
| Logical Connection | The reader has to guess it themselves. | Transition words clearly guide the way. |
| GED Score (0-2 scale) | Will only get 0 or 1 in Trait 2 (Organization). | Guaranteed to get a full score of 2 in Trait 2. |

Common Mistakes (L1 Interference)
Let’s look at 5 common mistakes Myanmar students make when using transition words due to the influence of their native language (L1).
❌ Wrong: Passage A talks about solar energy. On the other hand, Passage B talks about solar energy too. (Do not use if the topics are the same) ✅ Right: Passage A supports solar energy. On the other hand, Passage B opposes it. (Must be used only when comparing two contrasting views.) Psychology: The Burmese phrase “တခြားတစ်ဖက်မှာကျတော့” (on the other hand) is often used whenever switching to a new topic.
❌ Wrong: Firstly, Passage A is good. Furthermore, it has facts. Therefore, it is strong. In conclusion, it wins. (Mechanical and unnatural) ✅ Right: Use transitions only when moving to a new paragraph or where there is a logical shift, and connect the rest using pronouns (he, it, they). Psychology: Thinking that using transitions will yield high marks, leading to placing a transition at the beginning of every sentence.
❌ Wrong: But Passage B has no facts. So, it is a bad argument. ✅ Right: However, Passage B lacks factual evidence. Consequently, it presents a weak argument. Psychology: Using FANBOYS conjunctions, which are commonly used in spoken language, at the beginning of sentences in an Academic Essay.
❌ Wrong: Passage A is strong however Passage B is weak. (Run-on sentence) ✅ Right: Passage A is strong; however, Passage B is weak. (Must use Semicolon and Comma together) ✅ Right: Passage A is strong. However, Passage B is weak. (Must use Period and Comma together) Psychology: Forgetting that transition words are adverbs and treating them like conjunctions (And/But), leading to punctuation misuse.
❌ Wrong: Luckily, the author uses statistics. / Sadly, the opposing side has no proof. ✅ Right: Words like Fortunately and Unfortunately destroy the Objective Tone and should never be used. Use only objective words like Furthermore, Conversely. Psychology: Driven by the desire to include personal feelings.
